A (relative) handful in 2001 and 2011 answered the religion question in a jokey way. In doing so they created a minor ripple in those for whom religion was other? The point, almost certainly recorded with reasonable degree of accuracy, is the drift away from the Church of England.
This year nationality 'other' will have a lacuna where people state European as an act of revolt against Brexit. Doesn't prevent the headcount and data on most other things being useful from the point of view of informing policy.
Why worry about telling them you're straight (or whatever)?. Nothing will be disclosed that link that back to you until you and anyone in your household is long dead. Only about now is paperwork from censuses in the early 20th Century being disclosed.
This year's is likely to show changes influenced by pandemic/lockdown.
If you don't do a headcount type census how do you gather information for policy etc making?
