He was a major public figure with a varied career spanning many generations and known (and respected) across the world.
Like it or not, we are still have a monarchy and all the trappings which go with it (which I know work different ways for different people). That includes a period of national mourning and appropriate coverage when a VVIP dies.
The BBC approach may seem a bit old fashioned but that's their job, which IMO they do very well, even though I didn't watch much. I don't think laughable is a good description. Your fawning is someone's else's respectful.
25 years ago I did think the Diana thing was way overboard but I respected the fact that others felt differently.
As mentioned somewhere above, there is plenty of stuff to do these days other than watching TV and getting offended.
