I want to agree, it's a bit like wearing a suit to a wedding or not swearing in the presence of your grandma. Not everybody requires it but it can't be wrong and offends no one to confine one's remarks to sympathetic, respectful and complimentary contributions, at least until after the funeral baked meats have been cleared away.
That said the BBC seems to be stuck in the 1950's, to the point where younger folk (say, under 60) might mistake it for satire. Their SOP has hardly changed at all since this article in 2001 - it could have been written last week if the DoE was substituted for HM the Queen Mother -
