Hmmm!
My PC seems to have untangled its knickers.
Since taking out the power supply Wednesday evening, checking all the output voltages were within tollerance (source of info from 2 separate websites), blowing out some dust from the PSU and putting it back in the PC, touch wood it's been fine.
All I can think is either there was some dust causing some tracking issues on the PSU PCB, which is unlikely as I give the inside of the PC and the PSU a good clean every 6 months to a year anyway, so the dust build up is minimal, or the 20 pin connector to the motherboard had a dry connection and breaking/making the joint resolved it. I know about component creep, and simply pulling out something like the RAM or a video card and putting back into the socket again can solve problems.
Either way, it's working again (for now anyway). Touches wood once more for good measure and all that.
