I'd personally not risk copying over using a clone utility to a disk holding my backups. So my suggestion changes to getting a new external USB drive to back all data up. Then use the other drive to clone the original disk to.
Depending on how the second disk was setup, to make it bootable he might need to rejig partitions etc. We don't know how he has it partitioned in detail and telling a non-techy to do something that loses data.... not a good idea.
Remember if the drive fails when he is cloning it and he wipes out the backup he loses everything. If he lived nearer I'd lend him a disk.
