I was chatting to a Queen's Counsel (QC) during a break in proceedings.
He had come up from London to defend a student in an assault case - very small beer for a QC.
Teasing him gently, I said: "Your client's family must be very wealthy to be able to afford a man of your calibre."
"They are loaded," he replied. "But they won't be by the time I've finished with them."
He knew he was talking to a journalist, albeit informally, but on any view it was a risky remark.
It sums up the best QCs - supremely confident and sharp as tacks.
