It's a long way back up the thread, but Cliff, were you thinking of Haydn's Farewell Symphony? He wrote it as a protest at the musicians not being paid enough by their patron, who I think was Prince Esterhazy. They also thought they were due for a holiday.
I think Haydn's light-hearted protest had the desired result.
