The Trusty Korando turns 4years old tomorrow.
So far so good.

Certainly does. My 'new' MX-5 is going for its 8th year service tomorrow.

The dealership rang this morning "to remind [me] of the appointment", and to ask if I might want to buy a new one as they "have some great deals available".

No, I don't thank you. Other than signs of use, the car is like new at 40,000 miles, none of them on a salty road. The new ones weigh about 50Kg more than mine, and come with stop-start, lane departure warning system, lane keeping assist (which tries to steer if you cross a white line without indicating) and driver attention alert. I think mine is better.

I reckon it will do another 8 years, even if I don't.

They rang you on a Sunday? Someone's getting overtime!

I think virtually all main dealers open Sunday morning.

Open for sales but you'll be lucky to catch the service dept at all over a weekend, and parts only til lunchtime on Sat used to be my experience of the local Ford place, admittedly some years back

I did ask the chap if he was in the sales department - he said yes.

It's EMG Cambridge. I only really take it there to maintain a service record, which is probably unnecessary now. I've just serviced the brakes and changed the pads myself, and swapped the wheels about in the prescribed manner. All they have to do is change the engine oil (supplied by me) and filter, and replace the brake fluid.

Does anyone know why they don't just test the brake fluid and replace as necessary?

We have just been on holiday in the Picos mountains of northern Spain. There was a chap on the tour with a 2007 911 who boiled his brake fluid by enthusiastic driving in the hills. A very phlegmatic chap in his 80's I'd guess, he "just changed down a couple of gears and had to use the handbrake a bit".

I've never known this to actually happen to anyone else except my brother, about 50 years ago.

The gungy brake fluid lives in the pipes and calipers so needs flushing through. The master cylinder can be tested for moisture content.

I know someone who. many years ago, had to use a hedge to assist in slowing down Traffic Granada as the brakes totally cooked.

Our 2009 156k mile Honda FRV is due its MOT October 6th.

I fear it is heading for the cuber on the 7th!

A mere youngster. My 08 reg Polo went through it's MoT on the 19th, just a couple of roll bar links needed.

Just had my EV get its 4th year service. Vauxhall main dealer. I'd booked it in for a Friday but they requested I change it to the Saturday. Which was more convenient. Anyhow amongst other things of a minor nature they changed the brake fluid. No advisories at all. Not surprised as I do pretty much all my braking using regen anyway.

And my Honda FRV from 2007 recently sailed again through its MoT. 18 years old, and still going strong.

Mrs BJ's 2006 Panda passed it's MOT recently - no advisories. Only 60k and thoroughly rust proofed though.

Should I ever buy another new or nearly new car, I'm going to do the rust protection first thing.

I did this with my MX-5 before its first winter. Cars of a similar age (8) have rusting, flaking sub-frames. Mine is AFAIK as good as new and it certainly looks it. Searching for non-existent rust at MoT time when I can get underneath it is incredibly satisfying.

We live near the coast, it parks on a gravel driveway, and it's a scabby mess underneath (though I did start using Bilt Hamber underseal on it 4 or 5 years ago.

Still runs sweetly, and the 5-spd auto box shifts beautifully.

It is effectively a dump-run car these days that owes me nothing and gives me something to occasionally use my toolkit on!

Always look forward to these updates! Glad it’s continuing after HJ closure.

Slight thread drift, many years ago as I had a relative working at BL longbridge I took advantage of the employee purchase scheme and bought a brand new Marina It was immediately rustproofed by Endrust. When I sold the car 3 years later there was rust perforating From just behind the headlight. My 13 year old Polo is still going strong without any rust problems.
