At one stage relatively recently some analysis was done while high pressure/still air created the sort of London brown smog we have atm. That was I think the first to point the finger at wood burners for particulate pollution.
The 'Great Smog' of 1952, when domestic coal was still king and London had massive coal fired industry, led to the Clean Air Act and smokeless zones.
