The BBC does some niche stuff unavailable elsewhere (decent talk radio and at least some radio drama, Radio 3, documentaries, news mainly). When the BBC is not funded to do this, it will simply be unavailable or cost a lot more. The BBC IMO should never have been forced to produce mind-rotting tripe like 'reality TV' just to justify its existence anyway. Even the mainstream stuff is likely to cost more when it is commercially produced (cf. Sky subs with the licence fee).
All that is just life I suppose, but the government we have seems to hate the BBC and for that matter Channel 4, hence its obvious efforts to control the tone and scope of the BBC and the government's suppression of scrutiny by our supposedly independent broadcaster (suspension of the ministerial media round for example). The BBC will be reduced to a stub or eliminated I expect, even if the current crooks are chucked out for a while, and we will be the poorer for it.
