Article on msn at the moment sport.uk.msn.com/exclusives/female-drivers-are-coming-to-formula-1-says-red-bull-boss My first reaction was yeah, so what? Then it got me wondering how they could redesign the cockpit for a handbag and small pack of tissues ;-) Then I thought that the current male drivers are very fit and have figure hugging race suits, so if a fit bird squeezes into one of them, then....hubba, hubba, F1 just got interesting again. There was once a Female woman driver in the BTCC championships, Fiona someone or other, never won much i dont think, always seemed to finish mid-table. Lacked the "bully syndrome" to get tough when needed i always thought. Still good on the lass for having the courage to enter into such a "Male-dominated" arena and attempt to "give it a go"! My point was Iffy that the quips that have appeared on this thread re handbags, tissues, parking etc are I am sure meant as banter with no malice. I see no difference with perhaps a quip about a pink gun. Take that one out of the allegations and the original complaint starts to shake a bit. It still had her trademark CMC77 number, although that attractive registration did not come with the car. She retired from racing after a nasty accident at Silverstone when she lost control of the big Austin Healy 3000 she was driving, as she entered the pit straight. I'm not in favour of all this hoo-hah about a woman being an F1 driver. When a lady driver is up to it...then good luck to her...if not...no can do. It's the same with all the rubbish about Hamilton being the first black driver. So what. He's in F1 because he's damned good, not because he's black (or half black if you're a pedant...like me). I only started the thread as a bit of lighthearted ribbing, but I agree with you Westpig, it shouldn't matter a jot what gender someone is - if they're good at the job then let them go for it. You've only got to refer to that female Red Arrows pilot and Tornado pilot to realise gender has no affect on ability - unless of course you're talking childbirth! ;-) Reply to this message | Report message

Of course lots can drive, have the eyesight, the reactions, the mechanical nous, the bottle, even the neck muscles. I don't see why the right woman shouldn't get some ahead-of-the-game backing some day. Could be of course that women aren't mad enough for the higher forms of mediatized motor sport.
