Do these camaras reduce crimes or is it a excuse to have less coppers on the beat.?

I'm no expert just thinking.

I don't think they reduce crime but they may improve the detection/arrest rate for crimes that have taken place.

A strong sentence works as a deterrent which reduces the crime.

Unfortunately it is a rare event nowadays.

i live in leicester, apparently on the news today we have more than any other county in england ( 2000+) god knows where the monitors and staff are ? i dont think they advertise that sort of information

I'm not that convinced that they stop crime.Obviously if a crime is filmed it will help detection in some cases.Maybe big brother watching us more and more.

Camden Council had CCTV cameras that could bark instructions to citizens.

It told people to "leave the area", even if they were entitled to be there (they lived there).

Won't be long before they insist on them in our front rooms just as predicted in 1984!

To leave the area even if they lived there thats funny zippy.

We have ways of making you obey.>;)

Don't forget they are just the council run ones, there will be a few hundred ANPR cameras as well.

Some authorities say that CCTV cameras are more economic and give a greater coverage than policemen on the beat.

Economic maybe - use for making on the spot arrests - null points! Plus, whenever there is a major incident how often do we read "Poilce are trawling thru hundreds of hours of CCTV film in the hope of etc etc" These hours could be better spent as a visible and active presence on our streets IMO.

A vast amount of money spent without much evidence of results
