 Voice recorder for mobile - MD
a Motorola Defy (HTC). I urgently need to be able to record calls. Can anyone assist me in this matter as the 'phone does not have that facility installed. I have no knowledge of 'Apps' or their installation so please make it simple.

Much cheaper and simpler to record from a landline, using an in-line junction box.

This little box plugs inline between the telephone and the handset.

The jackplug outputs the sound, so you need a device to record that.

I use a little memo recorder, but the jackplug will fit the microphone input of any laptop.

This is what most journalists use when recording calls, it's cheap and reliable, and even we can understand how to operate it.

The call to be recorded is usually initiated by the journalist, so using a landline is no problem.

There seem to be a few call recording apps in the Android market - here's one market.android.com/details?id=com.killermobile.totalrecall.market&hl=en.

But many seem to be just recorders i.e. you have to make the call using the speaker and it records the sound, so don't know how good it would be. The one above may not be like that (hard to tell from the description), it's a fiver, and may not be compatible with your phone so you should test thoroughly before relying on it, as I have no experience.

I believe some apps - even if they work - result in another call being registered by the network, so there may be an impact on the bill.

Simple really - Always use the phone on hands free, and carry one of the small pocket Dictaphone that you use.

Do you have a Dictaphone?

On my previous phone (Nokia N70) I obtained something called "Total Recall". It was a brilliant and did exactly as you required.

Unfortunately I haven't found an app for the iPhone that does the same job.

I recently needed to record a phone call, so I did exactly what Zero suggests. I put the iPhone on loud speaker and used my old N70 as a digital dictaphone to record the conversation.

Isn't it technically illegal to record a call without the other party's express consent anyway? My Nokia has a call recording feature but it inserts a beep every few seconds, audible to both parties during the call.

MD, would you be better off conducting communications by text message? Texts are time- and date-stamped, archived and irrefutable. They were accepted as evidence in my favour by the famli y cour t when I had child access problems a couple of years back.

That's what I thought too. I put an app on a Nokia phone to try this out once - and it insured beeps so everyone knew it was recording.

Martin is not saying he won't tell the other party he is recording them. As long as they give consent it is not illegal.

I know the rules.

Text won't do in this instance.

I have gone back to an old Nokia for the purpose. 6500 slide to be fair. Apparently the worst phone Nokia ever made. Best one I ever owned IMHO.

Voice recorder just perfect.
