Best surface for optical mouse - L'escargot
What's the best (or acceptable) type of surface to run an optical mouse on? I found that my virtually indestructible Fellowes Brite-Mat was wearing the rubber pads on the underside of my mouse. I've currently got the mouse on a buff coloured soft fabric placemate and it seems to work reasonably well.

I use a mouse mat with a gel-filled wrist rest on it.

The nylon covering over the whole thing is kind to the mouse's underpinnings and the rest serves to eliminate "mouse wrist".

My optical mouse is working fine directly on the surface of my light oak woodgrain ikea desk

Pads are not required with optical mice.

Like Tee Cee, pads are required with gammy wrists though, optical mouse or not!

Glad it's not just me does that then.

i got a sharkoon mouse mat, its nice and smooth and easy to clean, previously had a small mouse pad and ran out of space when using the mouse, incidently its a rokat knoe+ mouse

My work mouse/mat combo is similar to OP. Mouse has shed it's pads but still works OK.

At home I've tried various combinations. Current Aldi (Tevion) item won't work with my favourite mat/silicon rest combo but is fine used directly on desk.

Its actually, "rolled on the damp sweaty thigh of a dusky Cuban maiden"

We bought my son one of these for Christmas; he says it's "pretty good", high praise indeed.

I think the name alone justifies the price :)

What's it made of? In the past I've found that the top layer of fabric on foam mats peels off at the edges. My current mat claims to be "Virtually indestructible under normal use", but it's wearing away the rubber pads on the bottom of the mouse.

'Heavily textured cloth weave' according to the description. I'll go and have a look when son gets up, see if there's any signs of wear yet. It does get fairly heavy use.

Are they rubber? The ones on the mice I use (basic, nothing special) look to be some sort of low-friction plastic.

At 12 quid for a poxy mouse mat (thats not needed) it needs to be made of gold plated titanium with diamond edges.

Well if you've got one of these you're not going to put it on any old bit of cloth:

Don't worry, he paid for that himself!

Looked at the mat - no signs of wear yet, and it does have a quality look/feel.

That's a lot of money for a few extra buttons.

usually PTFE (teflon).

If Les is wearing out the teflon, he maybe he should try ceramic:

"Indestructible Sliders
Review: Nova Slider X 600
Rather than the usual Teflon sliders, this mouse uses ceramic glides. They're much tougher and they're super smooth!"

That is a first, Dixons the cheapest supplier, if site is to be believed!

I found a number of items were cheapest, and in-stock, at Dixons in the last two months which were either more expensive and/or out-fo-stock at other competitors.

Both Dixons and Currys have had some exceptionally cheap electrical/computer bits over the past few weeks.

dixons need to compete with the online retailers selling those cables, me think they only cost a few quid rather than the £50 for a hdmi cable at currys or comets

A white or light coloured background works best so the coordinates can be worked out...:-)
