One of my early memories of living in London was Bob Holness & Douglas Cameron doing 'AM' on LBC. Richard Hudson-Evans on the traffic bulletin, Marie Collette with news of BA flights.
In those days a MW station still advertised by it's wavelength - 261m

They don't seem to do that any more :-/, not sure when frequency took over from wavelength as the identifier. Found a set of BBC stickers the other day, to attach to one's transistor radio, from when Radio 1 changed from 247 to 275m.

You've seen the state of my garage then :-) .......haven't been able to fit a car in there since 2002 - and it's a double garage!

If I had to stick my neck out on that one I'd say mid eighties. There were changes in allocations to allow a spacing of exactly 9khz between 'channels'. The old light prog later R4 w/l of 1500m/200khz became 198khz. Z or one our other techs/hams will know.

My memory of Holness is the same as Bromp's.
Sensible news talk radio on a commercial station was a rarity then, if not now.
Holness and Douglas Cameron broadcasted with a BBC-like authority.

There was always his solo on Baker Street.....;-)

RIP indeed. It's a shame Ed Moribund managed the following gaffe when tweeting earlier though:

Must have something on his mind ;-)

Got to feel sorry for Bob Holness, he dies, gets to the pearly gates and the first thing he gets is Amy whinehouse asking him for an "E please Bob"
|
What's she doing up there?
|
I didn't think Amy Winehouse took ecstasy. So what's the joke? Or maybe she did. Still poor taste. You could have spelt her name right in respect too.
|
RIP!
I enjoyed Blockbusters. Good family entertainment and remember watching it with my brother when we were kids.
I always liked the way he handled the "unruly" kids. Always with aplomb and a wry smile. Looking at the clips I get the impression that he really enjoyed doing the show.

Bob Holness deserves respect, does Amy?...debatable.

Since as far as I am aware she never did anyone any harm, brought a lot of enjoyment to to others through her music and died tragically young of course she deserves respect.

>>of course she deserves respect.
Agreed. Good joke too, not really disrespectful.

>>she never did anyone any harm, <<
She brought untold worry to her friends and family, set a terrible example to a vast band of young and very impressionable followers, appeared in public in a state not many of us would contemplate and lined the pockets of the drug dealers in many countries.
Respect?
Her only redeeming factor was her music and talent, but it doesn't excuse in any way, her example and behaviour.
If anyone's next door neighbour behaved in the way she did, they would condemn it left, right and centre.

Just read that in isolation - I thought WHAT ? BOB ?!!!!!!

I agree with Pat.
As a parent I can sympathise with Mitch Winehouse's appeal several years ago for fans of his daughter's work to stop buying it, so she could no longer afford to destroy herself in that way.
The adulation heaped on the girl since her death has been IMO been way over the top.
|
I can admire a persons talent but to earn my respect, I have to look at the package as a whole, I'm afraid.

"Her only redeeming factor was her music and talent"
I think she would be happy with that as an epitaph

Who's to say that I wasn't referring to another Amy with a similar sounding surname that had a liking for drugs.
|
The joke was funny, Amy was a great musical talent but we all knew she was a mental wreck and would croak, and Bob was unique and would smile at the fact that we lot could argue over the unique abilities and value to society of an empty paper bag if it had a name.
