 What's with the dating ads? - car4play
I mean our top content is hardly dating related.

"Ferrari lookalike" - well maybe...

"Getting a good night's sleep" - I get that one ...

"Connecting TV to HD Box" - err .. can't see any connection.

I tried Googling to see if Adsense sends more ads of a particular kind depending on the history of what has been clicked on and perhaps some of you are attracted to the especially desperate looking ones that are being displayed? (BTW was asked here to moderate my original word to "desperate").

Possibly too many shoe related thread drifts leading to mentions of "old boots" ?
 What's with the dating ads? - spamcan61
Is it just me, or do most of the laydeez in these dating ads. have a complexion which matches their furniture colour?
 What's with the dating ads? - rtj70
Like many I am seeing a lot of these ads and have clicked on none. And I've tried tweaking what Adsense displays based on 'interests'. I can see why the thread I started mentioning this was happening over at HJ too ended up with these ads because of the content of the thread.

Could that thread be to blame - i.e. Adsense has remembered keywords from that thread and apply them to users on this site?
 What's with the dating ads? - rtj70
Ads I just got for this thread were SouthLakeland Parks and then I go to post... and see a dating one for mature people. We'll all end up turning adblockers on for this site I think.

Edit... and now back to fairly normal ads. Dell, first4lawyers and National Accident Helpline.

Funnily enough, its the "mature" dating adds that come up most. I blame the rest of you old err persons.
What's with the dating ads? - Pat
I have a theory:)

When I've looked for various things on the web, I have come on here and found Ads for the very same thing.

That means that we have a few on here using dating sites....so come on, own up, because it isn't me!

Seriously, the 'mature' ones are a embarrassing. My daughter saw them over my shoulder the other night and had some fairly pithy comments.

Yes, but I'm continually shocked at just how narrow minded the young are now.

They need to live in the liberated 60/70's for a year or two to broaden their minds.

There seems to be a feeling that life as we know it, doesn't exist unless you're under the age of 18.

If she's capable of pithy comments then she should understand that sex and love doesn't stop just because you are 'mature'

I think she's seen and heard enough to understand that Pat.

The pithy comments were about the sort of sites I was viewing to obtain a window on the 'mature dating' world.

The same ads have been turning up on a "DIY" and "handyman" site I visit.

Maybe it is those words and the 4play here that is attracting the ads.

The builder's comments on the ads over there have been a bit more robust!
What's with the dating ads? - Ted

Well fancy that, all new to me, I have the site on a fair amount of zoom in so I never get to see the right hand side of the screen.

Just had a look at it and, lo and behold....there's a mature dating ad with a very pleasant looking girl in what looks like a maid's kit !

Now it's changed to Vauxhall Masterfit......even less likely to interest me.
Now, how can I get the maid back ?

Ted

I really coudn't imagine what it would be like to form a relationship in that way. Fortunately I'm not currently on the market so to speak so this is all idle hypothesis but I think as a man I'd be extremely wary of potential bunny boiling predatory shelfies and I'd say women should be cautious of stalky weirdos.

What ever happened to relationships formed out of shared interests and friendships arrived at in the normal course of life. Or is there a new cyber-normal?

We've been fighting to stop that kind of misleading advertising for a long time now......so many believe it.

It makes me so angry.

Thats odd that they can earn the same.

I tried opening this site from a PC at the gym. So with their software build (reverts to the clean build after every use so no cookies)... opened the main forum page and there were dating adverts.

That is possibly because there is a thread saying dating.

I didn't leave the window open for long in a public cafe at the gym with mature dating adverts on display.

Until this is fixed I've turned an ad blocker. I know if we all did this the site does not get any income but I don't want to see these ads when web browsing. Especially a site I use a lot.

I suspect this thread, the one I started and also the name of this one in the main forum list is causing ad-sense to display these ads. If this thread went and with it the dating ads reference I think it would help things.

I wonder if a mod should hide this thread (and the other one) and we see if it makes a difference?

I'd be happy to turn ads back on eventually.

I'm seeing the same ads on other sites too so I don't think C4P's owner has done anything.

More lilkely Google has lowered the bar in terms of the ads it will accept.

Answer to that is perhaps a 'mention' in the Mail or elsewhere about 'shocking' ads appearing on 'family' websites.

If Bromptonette sees fit to comment then there will be people out there who are put off to point of avioding site.

I can't be bothered arguing the balanced outlook point. Suffice to say there's next to nothing that's not discussed openly in this household.

I'm not too shocked if the 'full monty' is depicted on my screen but apart from family there's a 'NSFW' aspect. Some of the dating ads are near enough to the knuckle to cause problems in an open plan office. Which is not a bad test.

Agree on that. If my wife popped in as I was visiting the site and saw some of the ads she'd be asking what I was looking at for sure.

Until the ads are fixed, I've turned them off totally. I know the revenue stream is important but if this is the sort of ads being served then alternatives need finding. And if the site folds... sorry but I was happy with the ads until very recently.

I know the ads aren't great at times, but they are what Google just gives us. We don't have any control over them I'm afraid.

What we could do though is knock some of the site functionality out if people block ads because essentially what they are saying is that they want to use us without supporting us. A few lines of code could easily do this.

What's wrong with simply telling your wife this is a site you enjoy contributing to that is paid for with ads - and sometime they happen to be dating ones, especially as we keep mentioning the word. I am sure she knows that's what you like doing anyway so is there anything to hide?

And as for them being inappropriate in an office environment, in my experience if offices are that tight about things like that then it is more likely because they don't want their staff wasting their valuable time on non-work related activities.

What's with the dating ads? - Zero

>> can you describe in what way they are offensive or near the knuckle, because I really cant grasp it.

They're in denial Zeddo, or their wives and daughters are, or think they ought to be or something.

During carnival, when we lived in the Grove, sitting on the balcony in the afternoon watching the throng below, I used to tease my wife and daughter by bulging my eyes when scantily-clad young women were passing (as they were more or less constantly, phwoar!), staring down their tops and making remarks about 'pulchwitude' and 'embonpoint' in a cod Michael Winner accent.

Although they are both highly sophisticated and virtually unshockable in normal circumstances, this always worked a treat and sent them into towering rages. It was great fun.

My father, normally very proper, occasionally used to make shlup-shlup-shlup noises about women. But my mother just used to laugh.

These sort of ads are in magazines, shopping areas and we drive past them all the time...do we blinker our offspring?

No, we pay no attention to them if they don't interest us, and for those who haven't seen them before then it can only be part of an education for them.

Life isn't the same for all people, finding a partner isn't exclusive to going to the latest night club, neither is right or wrong, just part of life and living it.

That's pretty much the policy at my place. OK as long as it's not interfering with your work. So I pop in here in breaks and occasionally if I'm at a loose end - meeting delayed for 5mins that sort of thing.

The worry with the scantily clad 'matures' and foreign brides etx is some busybody deciding they're offended; diversity policy engaged etc.

Suspect they'd fail at a steward's inquiry but SI's are pretty stressful for the subject.

But I accept what Stephen says; we have to live on what google serve up. I think they'll live to regret 'lowering the bar' to allow contact type ads but somebody else can fight that one.
 What's with the dating ads? - rtj70
If the mods hide this thread, a lot of the ads will go. Adchoices uses keywords from the site to decide what to show. So the more we post something saying 'dating ads' the more we will see them.

Maybe hide this for a bit to see if it works? The whole thread I mean.

We could use code words to wrongfoot Google ads.

For example, instead of 'dating ads' write: 'flower arranging'.

Won't cause any confusion, will it?

OK - we'll give it a try. I'll post a suitably worded notice in Stickies in case the conspiracy theorists think it's some Stalanist censorship.

Ok - silly me - found the setting.
No more dates for you guys. No more seeing the scary person on the RHS!

I had to clear FF cookies and cache to get rid of them completely.

Ah! That would account for the 3% of revenue from those ads.

However I did leave in ads from retail shops like Specsavers. ;-)

Thanks Steve. The place now fits its market again.

Actually, the irrelevant clutter having gone, I'm seeing ads worth clicking on.

I am glad the ads seem fixed. I assume they were okay for ages on default on Google changed something. I first spotted a problem on HJ and then either my thread or the AdChoices issue ended up here.

I am seeing either ads that are of interest to be or the forum. Some based on cookies I know I must have.

I wonder if I said Aston Martin if we'd see an ad though. I just saw one for the new Bentley Continental V8... typical demographics for one of them I guess on here.

Forgot to add thanks to Stephen. Shame you've lost the click through revenue from those ads from some.

you gotta love the adds, I am now getting some for Cruises!

Another grinning munter's popped up now but this one's selling an accident claims service.

Sort of thing That's Life would have been exposing.

All I get is Healthspan adverts. I've no doubt that signifies something!

FF = Firefox. Whichever browser you are using you probably need to clear 'cookies' to remove the ads, but if you're not getting them you're ok. In Firefox you can clear cookies using the Tools/Clear Recent History menu option.

Firefox. I clear my cookies by regularly running CCleaner.

Thanks. It's probably time I started using CCleaner again. I stopped using it with my new (Windows 7 Home Premium) computer because I found it got rid of cookies that I didn't want it to and I haven't yet got round to sorting it.

You need to go into CCleaners settings and tell it the cookies you don't want deleting.

Now getting ads for the Bentley Continental V8. I actually saw one yesterday and it's an ugly looking brute, especially the blinged up wheels, so probably wouldn't be interested even if I could afford one.

No indication of the price, but if you have to ask etc.

Have you noticed the little 'AdChoices' symbol now appearing in the advertisements?

Clicking on it enables you to opt-out of being tracked, but it does rely on you retaining your no-tracking cookie.

Of course tracking should be opt-out by default but that's another argument.

It's been there for ages. But even if you tweaked the options previously, you still got the dating ads. Now Stephen Khoo has turned these off at the server level we don't see them.
