Taxi fare around the country - same or varies? - movilogo
Is the fare same everywhere in UK?

AFAIK, fare depends on both distance travelled and time taken (to compensate drivers when stuck in traffic).

I think for minicabs you can somewhat bargain. But for black cabs, meter rates are fixed. Isn't it?

Meter rates are fixed for black cabs and controlled by local authorities outside of London. Mini cabs set their own fares.

One of the mini cab firms near us do some fixed price routes, e.g. airport runs. And the cost of this came down recently so there must be competition.

I would imagine a black cab journey in London would cost more for the same time/distance than say in Manchester.

The trade journal publishes a league chart of fare tarriffs each month. London is currently at number 7...

Airport runs (heathrow / gatwick) round here have never been cheaper.

I drove the things for 10 years but I never used them myself. Before I gave it up 5 years ago, our private hire rates were roughly a pound a mile, with a four quid minimum fare. Hackney cabs were around 10% more expensive overall but their flagfall price was around £2.40 IIRC.

My dad phoned a few firms recently to get a price for a 26-mile minicab journey - the cheapest quote was £48. It was cheaper for me to drive the 100 miles down and give him a lift.

26 miles is about the distance from home by the Thames to Heathrow. I pay £33 for a proper big saloon car, as recorded in the 'Back Seat' thread.

I suppose airport routes offer the possibility of collecting another passenger for the trip home, which maybe allows the firms to offer lower fixed rates.

I find that Black cabs don't cost that much more than a lot of the private hire operators. Costs me £11.50-£12 to get back from the city centre on a night out, 3.5 mile journey. I usually get the bus but its stops running before 3:00am. On one occasion we stayed out till 5:30am all the public transport started running again.

I found that mini cabs in East Manchester are about 30-40% cheaper than the ones in South Manchester.

I took a taxi home from Gatwick last week via the office, total mileage around 15 /16 and was charged £37 ... having just flown in overnight on the redeye from Dubai .

From 23 degrees to a snowstorm at 6 am and half asleep , I thought it was pricey but was in no mood to argue....company pays anyway.

Going the other way using local cabs the rate is around £27.

Irritatingly, I have a business trip in early January which due to flight times and meeting commitments at the other end means I have to fly out from Heathrow but return to Gatwick. Can't be bothered yet to decide whether to leave my car at Gatport Airwick and take a taxi to Heathrow or the other way round. Either way it's a faff and I don't suppose it'll be cheap.

Probably best to leave the car at Heathrow and hop on a coach from Gatwick when you come back.Loads of the National Express coaches heading north from Gatwick stop at Heathrow .

Car parking is cheaper at gatwick and nearer to the terminal. Use BCP and choose the slightly dearer but still cheap on site long term. There is a regular bus twixt Gatwick and Heathrow.

For you its 40 minutes extra driving each way tho.

I said at the time the M25 / M23 were being built. "What dick weed did not specify building a high speed rail link Heathrow - Gatwick into the design of both roads". Sure it would have added an extra few million, but nothing to trying and build it from scratch, and it would have recouped its relatively trivial investment in a few years.

Easy peasy. Do you want the hassle of transferring outbound or inbound?

I always prefer to get out of the airport and on my way home ASAP. If you use Maple Manor Meet and Greet at Gatwick you're on your way within 15 minutes of calling them.

Taxi fares from all local firms are first mile is £2.80.

Black & White on meter is From the centre of Leeds to Home 7 miles is about £10-12 depending on the haggle we have with him first.

It used to be on the local firms at Christmas the fare would go up but not anymore it stays the same rate and has done for the past 2 yrs.

Talking to the Asian drivers it seems there quiet lately with many having second/third jobs to make do, not happened in the past when pubs were not shut.
