They can call it what they like, It will still be Staines to the locals, and it will still be a dump.

With a nod to The Frost Report, or whichever programme it was.

I live in Weybridge and I look down on him.

I live in Woking and I look up to him, but down on him.

I live in Staines, and I know my place.

...What if "I" live north of Watford Gap Iffy?...

You look down on all the stupid place name snobs in Surrey.

I know it well, the bit by the river is nice and that is what they are trying to market, makes sense to me.

I know it well as well. The bit by the river is not nice. Staines is a deeply unattractive bit of the river. That stretch from Chertsey to old Windsor is featureless and lacking in any aesthetic beauty at all. The bridges are ugly the town is ugly the landscape is ugly and the people are ugly.

As place names go (and not commenting on them but just the names), which sounds better:

- Staines
- Egham
- Old Windsor
- Datchet

Staines sounds naff. Not as bad as Sluff (Slough). Now I really dislike Slough.

Even the Swans and ducks at Staines
are ugly

Remenber it does have a bypass - at least on one side so you also avoid the gasometer.

most birds in and around ST.aines are UGLY !!

Iffy I don't live in Weybridge, but near by, I don't live in Walton on Thames ( or Moscow on Thames as its becomming, - NOT even Oatlands is good enough for me - its Oatlands Villiage

I've just had to Google Ali G to find out who he is.

What has he to do with the price of fish?

Staines seems to have missed an opportunity here - the new name includes 'Staines'.

Nameplace snobbery not limited to the South - Wirral and Cheshire have their own snob values (Humph would tell you more) - Cheshire boundaries are particularly flexible.

Its easy to judge towns with aspirations to be middle class - Just check if they have a Waitrose. Staines passes the test . Slough doesn't.

It may be better for the economy if they could get the River Severn to join up to the Thames, then anything south of that could just "float away"! ;-) ;-)

Would Sluff on Thames improve things???

Will Staines on Thames mean that all the prat navs will struggle to find Waitrose ???
What Would Ali G make of this? - rtj70
>> Would Sluff on Thames improve things???

No. It's a bit of a dump. The office made is look better than it is. Huge Tesco there.

I once parked in a car park behind one of our offices in Slough and there was a badly burned out car in there. Quite a new Golf GTi.

Indeed. We are in Cheshire. We are just over 40 miles from Chester.
What Would Ali G make of this? - R.P.
Chester is no longer in Cheshire !
What Would Ali G make of this? - rtj70
I know they split the old Cheshire County Council (that was headquartered in Chester) into Chester East and West. But I had assumed Chester was still in Cheshire.

It seems you lead a sheltered life.

There is a Siemens office in Staines. I wonder what they say when they answer the phone?

There is a Siemens office in Staines

priceless -
What Would Ali G make of this? - Zero
Its a pity Wang never had an office there. Their engineering service department used to be called Wang care.

MD was a Mr Bates allegedly.
What Would Ali G make of this? - Zero
No it was Dr. An Wang, who then passed on the MD's chair to his son Fred Wang.
What Would Ali G make of this? - Hard Cheese

Their sales guys were, er, drove Wang cars ...

I wondered how we were going to get that joke in.

They have an office in Sunbury and another in Hayes. I don't suppose that makes the joke work. I don't think Otis ever had an office in Reading either.

Edit: Someone no doubt will Google and find they do have an office in Staines itself :-)

What Would Ali G make of this? - rtj70
So likely to answer the phone with: "Hello, Siemens Building Technologies...."

;-)
What Would Ali G make of this? - Zero
no - you would have to ... now and again... just to lighten the burden of a dreary day.

I used to have to call a depot where the phone was answered with "Good afternoon, XXX Plant Lifting and Handling Northampton, XXX speaking. How may I lift and handle you?"

I am obliged to counsel.

It seems I have taken my aversion to recent popular culture a bit too far.

I haven't got a clue oo Ali G is (wife would know, but is in Essex) I used to go to Staines quite a lot as a kyd,
Penton Hook was my favourite night fishing haunt,

Staines on Thames sounds absolutely re-dic-ulous IMO!
