The nav lights on a small boat im doing up used to run a 12v ac right from the outboards ac supply. now ive changed the engine i have a 12v dc battery.

can i just wire up the old nav lights on ac to the new dc supply battery.

the wiring is immaculate so no problems with the supply just dont know much about 12v eleictrics.

Yes should be fine as long as its only lights involved. The only area of concern would be switches, but given the small currents involved it should not be a problem,

You may know for sure but it's usual when running 12v direct from an outboard with no battery to find the output is off a rectifier under the outboard hood so perhaps you were already on 12vDC?

What sort of boat... cuddy fishing type or similar?

shetland 498 mid 90's.
the engine i took off said it was on 12v ac but i didnt look for a rectifier. doh.
i will wire it up to the battery and see what happens. its a 17ft with a cabin.
ive put a new outboard on it so had to have a battery.
the original wiring is perfect as the man bought it in 1985 and used it for a few months and then died and his widow put it in the garage until a few months ago. its im perfect condition all over the original engine was too under powered forharbour use

its got a fourstroke 30hp on it and it does plane with 2 onboard.

i might keep it on its trailer and use it in the harbour and rivers as my arvor is a pain to tow with my cars and i dont really want a rangerover just to tow a boat.

im not using the avor as much as i thought i would and when i do i rarely leave the harbour so may sell it if the price is right
