Combi boilers and radiator bleeding. - R.P.
Reading a very comprehensive Housing Association "Repair Guide" booklet the other day - the section that covered Central Heating clearly said that if a Combi is fitted that radiators should not be bled and it went on to describe how Combi boilers have low pressure dials etc.

Any views ?

I've got a fairly new Worcester boiler here RP, and I went round bleeding the system a few weeks ago when I started the heating for the first time this Autumn, as I did last year without any problems. The engineer who serviced it in the Summer certainly didn't mention not bleeding it.

The boiler's got a pressure dial, and also has a valve you can use to add water to the system to raise the pressure.

They can be bled, and indeed may have to be bled from time to time (tho less likely than a gravity system) . One simply tops up the pressure again afterwards if its dropped.

^^ Wot he said.

I thought it was a bit odd. This book was very well written though, plain English with line drawings - basically telling tenants what they were responsible for and what the Association is
Responsible for and to aid the fault reporting process. Just that odd comment that seemed odd

Still summer down ere so not put the eating on, yet!

Combi is a first for me, always had the old type broiler before now,

I do check the ole gauge from thyme 2 thyme though, to make sure it reads 1 bar,

So, this is what i'd do if I fort me rads needed a blimming bleed ~

Even a Mastermind (like moi) can managed that ;}

I bleed my radiators and, assuming the top-up valve hasnt seized like last time, I add water back in if pressure drops too much.

No worries.

I was actually working - a few days agency work, I was bored, believe me but it pays the dogs' Bonio

I've bled mine once or twice in the 4 years since I had a combi installed.

What worries me is the the boiler seems to need topping up every few months as the pressure gauge drops below 1bar. I can't see any leaks and when I top up none of the radiators seem to need bleeding!

Does it evaporate somewhere?!

How many radiators have you got on the system ?
Combi boilers and radiator bleeding. - Snakey
I've got 10 radiators in total on my system(3 bed detached) of which 2 are small and 2 are the towel heater types in bathrooms.

It doesn't seem to lose a lot, but it does need a top up every so often and I've never find any leaks!

How does one add water to a combi boiler?
As there is no water tank in our house, it is surely fed directly from the mains?

Yes, and mains water fed in through the filling loop provides the pressure. (well it doesent keep it pressurised, the pressure vessel does that)

I don't have a combi, but my system is the directly pressurised type, i.e. it has no header tank and no cold water storage tank. I believe it is referred to as a "vented mains pressure system".

I have to turn a tap every so often - maybe every three or four months - to bring the pressure up to the required level, which is around 1.25 bar. I've never found any leaks.

Radiators should never be bled by tenants.

If they require frequent bleeding then there is insufficient inhibitor in the system (or a leak) and a fitter should be called.
