Considering our average age (and mental faculties ;>) would it be worth considering setting up a 'how to find out what happened to' second email address that could receive a query after a fixed length of time?

I recall that Alanovic got some harsh banter, a few weeks ago. Perhaps he decided that the pain wasn't worth the gain?

I liked AV's posts, even though completely wrong he could be amusing on his anti 4x4 soap box.

Still miss Oilrag's posts too, a strange mix of pc intellectual stuff and good common sense car care.

Perhaps perversely, I find one of the major attractions to me of internet conversation is not having to feel especially obliged to justify anything, including one's attendance or absences.

The whole point, to me anyway, is to dip in and out as you please, to comment if you feel like it or not if you don't.

It's an unusual combination, surrealist poet and breaker's yard/back street car dealer retailing practical advice and often severe judgment of the average halfwit car user. He could be absolutely deadpan and on other occasions would come up with staggeringly funny flights of verbal fancy. Perhaps he didn't feel appreciated here - a 'mute inglorious Milton' -, but I think he was just too clever for us.

It was odd of him to take offence when one or two people teased him for all the >>>>>>>> stuff. Back in the Other Place of happy memory I once suggested that as a professional car dealer he had already sold his soul to the devil, then got worried about it and assured him it was just badinage.

Westpig hasn't been around just lately.

He has sporting attitudes and instincts and is honest. It must be difficult sometimes being a copper among outspoken civilians who fancy themselves, but he makes quite a decent fist of it. I think so anyway.

Princetown is a bleak place sure enough. The weather changes rapidly there and you can get lost in the sudden mists that envelop the moors. People can die of exposure on Dartmoor. It's one of the few dangerous wildernesses in this country.

The prison was built by, and for, French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic period. The stone was quarried nearby at North Hessary Tor, where the country's tallest radio and TV mast was put up in the early fifties. The quarry is an immense deep vertical-sided hole with black deep water at the bottom. Went there with the Scouts from Plymouth in the fifties. We kept warm by rolling huge rocks over the edge and watching them fall for a good couple of seconds before splashing into the murky depths.

When that palled we started hurling fresh pony dung at one another. Makes surprisingly effective missiles.

I'm impressed!

When I was in an isolated region of Dartmoor a few years back, a Helicopter appeared out of nowhere,
a lone squaddie slid down a rope, and proceeded to make his way (with full kit) to I know not where,
probably a Commando/Paratrooper etc., tough cookie in any case.

I'm still here and have a little look on here at least a couple of times a week.......it's just that life has changed a fair bit (for the better) and i'm still adjusting to having much more to do socially as i'm back now where I came from having kept in touch with quite a few people over the 31 years I was away and there's family here (because everyone is nearby now geographically, whereas in The Smoke everyone lived all over the place, often huge distances away and we had no family nearby)...and taking a 3 year old to and from pre-school... and preparing for the next one (little girl) due on Jan 3rd... and walking the dogs on Dartmoor or local beaches instead of a London park...and we fit a 2 week holiday in to Scotland outside of the school holidays (as my wife has given up work as a teacher).

You do have to be shrewd as Old Bill posting on forums...i'll lighten up a bit when i'm formally retired in February (i'm on a period of extended leave at the moment, having saved up days owing for quite a while i.e. didn't take them off in the past when I could have done)....Mind you, some of the shenanigans the newer lot do now on Facebook etc, i'd have no real problems.

 Where is ... - Roger.
I did my commando course in November/December on Dartmoor. (Many, many years ago and I did get my green beret!).
The 30 miler across the moors was quite tiring, although my pal & I were the quickest in our intake.

Bad enough on Bodmin Moor at times, I was in a tent up there once on my tod, mist came down all to quickly and I got lost, quite frightening and spooky + quiet, very very quiet, too easy to get swallowed up in the bog :)
Where is ... - Armel Coussine
>> I'm still here

Oh good. I hadn't taken in fully the fact that you were taking early retirement. Nor did I realise you had very young nippers. No wonder you feel life has improved.

Don't you miss the Smoke just a bit though? I like you have left the Great Wen for an area of ONB which I like having known it these forty years or more. But I always feel soothed and reassured when I get back to the 24-hour clamour of London, always a distant siren, always a distant roar even in the quiet of the night.

It's not that - convenient shopping apart - it's very nice, traffic congestion and speed bumps, rude passers-by, parking hassles and so on. It's more that after half a century there the noise and hustle feel sort of normal. Owls and poultry (both wild and domestic) and the occasional yapping fox don't cut the mustard.
 Where is ... - Westpig
>> Don't you miss the Smoke just a bit though?

If i'm honest....no I don't.

The traffic over the years has gone from bad to horrendous and the automated system of camera fines for parking etc and speed cameras everywhere, means motoring is no joy whatsoever...and I'm not good in crowds, so the tube or buses were avoided like the plague.

Then there's the increased 'lowering of the tone'...in that anti-social behaviour is more the norm nowadays...and by that I mean littering, playing one's car stereo at full pelt, blocking my drive, graffiti, etc, etc...so i'd noticed my quiet leafy decent London Borough becoming more and more like the less salubrious ones.

Then add in things like my local shop got an armed robbery (usually knives, but a gun on one occasion) about every 18 months...and it's 30 paces away from where I lived...(I gave the Sri Lankan chap a free rape alarm after one robbery, one of a few we had kicking about at work, to give out to potentially vulnerable females..on the next robbery attempt, when one of society's finest came in with a hammer, he pulled the tab out of the rape alarm and the miscreant panicked and ran off...I was quite pleased with myself).

Then the local BP petrol station (200 yards away) became the Borough's crime hotspot because all the oiks from the neighbouring Borough used it when the heat was applied on them on their own patch, it got ridiculous.

So to be honest....it was a no brainer........and I have no regrets whatsoever. I'm now half a mile from Dartmoor National Park and the nearest beach is about 5 or 6 miles away.

Where is ... - Armel Coussine
>> Don't you miss the Smoke just a bit though?

>> If i'm honest....no I don't.

Well, I was born there and have many connections there. But I guess the real difference is that I am an irresponsible civilian with a taste for dramatic entertainment, not a person professionally trained to repress disorder and protect property. Emergency service sirens are part of the decor for me. But of course they are all sounded for good reason, reason that is part of the background for me. I don't feel I have to confront it as a rule.

I do take your point too about the decline in standards of personal behaviour. But it's easy to exaggerate that. Genial attitudes and appalling comportment were always present side by side. There's a hallucinatory quality to it sometimes.

You're right about the traffic too, although perversely I can still enjoy London driving provided I'm not stuck in the middle of some moronic logjam (6.30 pm around Kew for example: don't go there then or you'll regret it). I am quite glad I won't be there next year for the Olympic Games God help us.

It occurs to me that forums are a bit like soaps - some of the characters are so realistic some people even think they are real.

I picture the moderators ploughing through mounds of fan mail, trying not to laugh as they impersonate the writing styles of the various forumites, resisting the mad impulse to reveal that we, like Santa, do not really exist.
 Where is ... - Dutchie
We'r living the dream Cliff.Truth is often stranger than fiction..:)
 Where is ... - R.P.
We never get any fan mail. You couldn't make up what happens here ! :-)
 Where is ... - Avant
Indeed you couldn't, RP. It would take a genius to invent the rich comedy to be found in the Four Rattles and a Funeral thread. The nearest to it in fiction is perhaps - anyone old enough to remember? - Jacques Tati's wonderful film creation Monsieur Hulot.

Incidentally, out of interest how many on C4P are girls? We have a few on HJ but in every sense we need more like Pat. I think Teabelly is a girl (many apologies if I think wrong!) but I can't think of any other regulars on here that I know to be of the female persuasion. Maybe forum posting is generally a male interest (like train-spotting and driving a Reliant Robin....)?

It's a funny situation for girls on this type of forum really.

We're here because it's where we feel most comfortable, not Mums.net of fashion.com, but we need to be treated just the same as you treat each other.

It's important to us that we get jumped on from a great height by Zero when he's grumpy, have our apostrophe's put firmly in place by WdeB, and made to feel that we're back in school by Mapmaker!

There is always the fear that you'll go easy on us if we come out and stop taking us seriously, as so often happens.

On another, completely unrelated forum, I once "outed" someone as both female and male, in fact I suspected two separate people were using the same identity. I imagined the situation that perhaps they were work colleagues but worked different shifts with access to only one computer.
The two different styles were interestingly contrasted, and obviously puzzled others because some people refered to "he" and others took the poster as "she". After my observation the person went strangely quiet, but I detected a shift from the rather aggresive response I normally got.
Where is ... - Mike Hannon
I take a look at some Brit ex-pat French forums most days and I would say the gender split is about 50/50. On one the women definitely out-number the men and another has an all-male following. Both are less interesting than the others...

Y'all get people with multiple personalities so why not multiple internet forum iden titties?

Quite an interesting thought to play with actually, one could literally 'become' anyone they wanted to be,

I can confirm that Bobbin Threadbare is indeed a lady - with a husband! She posts on HJ regularly.

I'd guess the reason for the lack of girls is that there are simply fewer feminine car enthusiasts: I think the great majority of women, even if they enjoy driving, view the car as a means of getting from A to B. SWMBO enjoys driving and is good at it, and likes driving my old BMW Z3 - but would never take it out just for fun, and would never have spent her own money on a fun car.

Although its obviously possible to impersonate someone of the opposite sex on line the style of writing tends to give you away in the long run. It is more difficult than you would think to sustain it over a long period.

Same in writing a book. You can usually tell if the writer of a novel was male or female.

I had a very similar reaction when my middle daughter started wearing DMs with a skirt her younger, non-dressy sister described scathingly as 'not a skirt... just a silly little frill.' This would have been around 1990 give or take a lustrum.

But when my essentially thirties aesthetic got shaken down a bit in the hurly-burly of the late twentieth century I realised that she actually looked terrific in what I could never stop calling her 'little hooves'. She's always been a dresser and her nippers are interestingly and tastefully turned out as a rule.

I have a pair of Green DM's here size 10. Received as a gift (?) in the 90's. Never been worn. Offers please!!!! (0:0)

Someone trying to tell you something Martin?

:-))

How did you get our photo album?
 Mapmaker - Runfer D'Hills
Seriously Martin, if they'd do for work or just general mooching about in but you just can't be doing with the colour, use some meths ( not turps or white spirit ) must be meths or fag lighter grade petrol to strip the top dressing off the leather with a rag. If it's stubborn rub them over first with a bit of fine sandpaper.

Let them dry off afterwards and then just polish them with whatever dark colour of wax shoe polish you have to hand. Be fine.

I don't have a prob' Humph to be honest, it's just they've been in a cupboard here for yonks and I have never got around to putting them on. Maybe I'll buy some Sta-pressed, a Ben Sherman button down shirt, some braces and attitude and skinheads rule again eh!. Never owned a Lambretta though!! Now the old BSA A10 on the track was a beast. Bit of a handful for a 13 yo. Happy days, not a care.................

sorry mate you would get a severe kickin for the green DM's. They needed to be ox-blood brown

Had them too at skooool. That WAS a long time ago.

I was convinced eldest daughter would be wearing DMs (obtained from their seconds shop in Northampton) under her bridesmaid's dress for her sister's wedding - she didn't.

I'm waiting to see what she'll be wearing on her feet under her wedding dress next year.

Golden coloured wellies.

I've never gorn a bundle on Dr Martins, actually, sure I've bought them since the 70's but, I don't find the sole is man enough for the job, now - you take my latest acquisitions - the 'Skechers Sergeants' I recently referred to, the soles on them are the equivalent to snow tyres :)

Back when I was about say 12 years old?, I used to go to quite a ruff school in S.E. London (William Penn sec. mod.) and (believe it or not) I used to wear cherry red Commando boots with my school uni-form (how sad is that!), I never 'used them in anger' though - one sight of em was enough!

Looking back, I don't think I should have been allowed to wear them to school, quite honestly.

I had a dog called Rover once upon a time, I'll never forget the sniggers when I took him to the vet and the receptionist asked his name :)

...I don't find the sole is man enough for the job, now...

I had a pair of DMs when I worked in the garage.

The sole melted/fell to bits in a few months.

Ordinary 'no brand' black work boots lasted much longer, but were not as comfortable to wear.

The fashion industry is full of examples of things which didn't or don't actually work very well but which nonetheless gain a following. The public remain remarkably biddable thank goodness from my point of view. The whole thing relies upon the basic instinct or insecurity which drives people to mirror each other or to identify with a particular group. Tribalism lies not too far below the surface of the human psyche.

The biggest problem IMHO, is that fashion has taken over common sense.
So many things these days, including car's suffer from 'form over function'

When I buy something, my priority is, will it do exactly what I want it to do?
Then comes value for money, and then what it looks like.

And therein lies the double edged sword. Some, as it would seem you have, eventually reach that place of utilitarianism and pragmatism but often in turn suffer irrational alienation as an ironical side effect of non-conformity.

Anyway, gonna put my tree up now. Better fit in eh ?....

Humph... I haven't REACHED that point... I've always been the same!

Having worked in the motor trade for over 30 years, I have seen many changes, and have driven a wide selection of vehicles - from 50cc mopeds, to super cars, also 7.5tonners.....
From the most basic, underpowered tat, up to one of the latest up to the minute overpowered, computer driven supercars...

What gives me the biggest thrill?
Riding a motorcycle. its that rawness, the feeling of being totally in control... the bike doesn't even need to be powerful to hit the spot!

Absolutely spot on ST - nothing else comes close...
 Mapmaker - R.P.
My near perfect RT went a couple of months ago in favour of a newer GS - The GS shares the superb chassis and electronic engineering of the RT - but far rawer - despite a howling gale and horizontal rain the GS gave me something the RT never managed - a ear to ear grin for 80 miles.

Skiing's up there for me. Probably much the same reasons. As in, getting it wrong hurts. Getting it right is intoxicating.
 Mapmaker - R.P.
It is Humph - dead right, I rode back from Bastogne to Give in France with a friend in front in 2008. We chose the mountain routes - classic ride and unforgettable for many reasons, not least his descriptions of seeing a my old GS canted over on some hairpins in his mirrors. BMWs shouldn't be able to do that was his comment. One of the best rides ever.

I bet if you had a choice of two otherwise identical cars, one silver metallic and one was bright pink you would choose the silver one even if the pink one was 10% cheaper

CG, let me preface this by reassuring you that I'm only arguing for the sport of it but...

:-)

ST could contend that he would buy the silver one for the practical reason that it would hold it's value better could he not? Sort of thinking man's pragmatism?

Must get that tree sorted...

Ah Humph - you and I are getting on the same wavelength!
 Mapmaker - CGNorwich
He could as indeed I probably would but in my case at least it wouldn't be true. I wouldn't want a bright pink car at even a substantial discount.

Many claim to be unconcerned with appearance but when it comes to the crunch few are.

Of course!
I said as much, IF you reread my comment....

Come on now, we know that the silver one is better value for money - 10% cheaper isn't enough for such an unsellable colour!

We all pay for utility. What utility is depends on the individual. It includes how effective and efficient something is on a purely functional level, but also appearance, brand, how it fits with self-image, the impression it might create, conformity (or unconformity) with perceived norms, and it's very complex.

We all care about brand one way or another whether we admit it or not. A whole counterfeiting industry has grown around it. You could write a thesis on Ugg boots, currently ubiquitous on females arriving at the office.

Car wise, a Ssangyong (sp?) Korando would do the job for me at about £10k less than the car I have. Would I have bought one had I seen it last March? I'm pretty sure it would work out cheaper in the long run, even with catastrophic depreciation. No, I probably wouldn't, but I can't explain why.

I could own and drive a pink car no problem, but it would have to be something equally unusual and not a common or garden €urobox,

I tuned an old type Vee Dub for a young lady once back in Hastings, that was bright pink, I gave it a good road-test afterwards and it was great fun, not un-like riding a motor cickle, in some ways.

This would do me, two tone ~cars.trovit.co.uk/index.php/cod.ad/what_d.volkswagen%20pink%20beetle/id.1uSp1VroO1L/pos.1/
