My car has an alternate speed display (digital) in the MFD. I am assuming in the UK this has to show km/h unless I use something like VAG.com to change something?

I can live with it especially as the speedometer has only mph markings to make very clear. In other countries the alternate speed display can be changed and even turned off.

Double check the manual, and if you still don't get any joy ask the dealer. On my Audi you can change the settings to display MPH instead of km/h. VW can't be that different, surely?

I've found that I prefer the digital readout in the MFD to the speedometer.

Both my dad's Merc C-Class and the Sprinter van I've been driving last week will only display the MFD speed in km/h.

MPH on my wife's previous Audi S3 Quattro as well.

I've driven a hired Sprinter with a tiny MPH readout as well.

I'll have a play with that next time I drive it, typically for an 11-plate the handbook has already gone walkies :-/

But the Sprinter is a Mercedes Benz.... so not sure how that helps with a VW question.

It doesn't directly but it suggests that mainstream makers have in general a system that can be switched between metric and imperial.

The MFD on a VW car in the States has the option to turn on/off the alternate speed display via the settings menu in the MFD. In the UK this option is not there. I was hoping someone knew of a way to turn it off without resorting to VAG.COM.

In the USA and Canada, you can change the units and turn this on and off via settings in the MFD. You can also switch on the display of the speed in a larger text size too. These settings are not enabled/visible it seems on the UK MFD setup.

I am assuming you cannot turn it off for legal reasons? The main speedometer has only mph on it (nice and clear) so if you drove in Europe you'd need km/h. And I guess in Europe the alternate speed display is fixed on mph.

Has your car got the speedo needle at the 6 o'clock position when stopped ?

On my wife's car when you switch the units from imperial to metric (and vice versa) the display shows accordingly. l/100kms = kms readout for speed, mpg = mph for speed.

C5 has this and you can switch the units in the menu.

Find the digital display clearer than the sactual speedo to read

When the car is stopped and ignition off (key fob removed) the needle is on 0mph.

But is 0 mph at the six o'clock position on the speedo ? Some of the VAG cars I looked at had that, including an A4 estate we borrowed (sorry Avant)

No 0mph is not at the six o'clock position (i.e. straight down). It couldn't be like that - the fuel gauge is inside the speedometer dial area at the bottom.

Also, the units can be changed for temperature, mpg (UK), mpg (US), l/km etc. But the option to change this alternate speed display to mph is not there. It is on American cars though. The ability to display a large speed readout is also not there. It probably could be turned on with vag.com software... I'm looking for a free solution if possible.

That Avant we had (12 months ago ?) had the big speedo imperial units, as you say it's a vag.com option then. Have you tried any VW forums ?

Not yet - I'll do some searching. I thought with some on here with VAG cars (e.g. a few with Skoda Octavias) which have the same MFD.... I might get a quick answer.

At least autolock/unlock is in the menus - it was a faff enabling that on my Mondeo in the past. I think the headlights can be converted to the continent in the lighting submenu too.
