To be fair, the people that did stop, especially the guy who reversed back, were mental to be walking about with traffic passing at some speed.

Indeed both a lorry and bus manouvered past. They would have been ideal to protect the casualty from further harm. Lucky they did not suffer further harm..

I've been in a couple of situations like that.

1. I saw a kid knocked off a bike, he was in the middle of the road. I stopped and despite the risk to myself I went and checked him, it wasn't good. I stopped the next car and instructed the driver to stop and use his car to protect the kid. I did the same to another car from the opposite direction. They complied!

2. I was on a dual carriageway and a couple of cars came together a hundred yards or so in front of me, blocking both lanes. After a few minutes it was obvious no-one was going anywhere, so I wandered down. I confirmed no-one was injured, so instructed the drivers to move their cars to the side of the road. They complied! By the time I got back to my own car, I was causing the obstruction.

The good Samaritan. They all passed by, but a biker stopped.

The car drivers who stopped in the opposite lane arguably made it more likely the biker would be run over because they created a chicane.

Difficult to know what to do for the best.

The guy who stopped in the opposite lane was the start of it, he was immobilised before the accident.
The biggest problem there was the way the traffic was bunched up, maybe it was the camera angle, but to me everybody seemed to be tailgating.

I dont know where this is, but in some European countries it was an offence not to stop and assist injuries

France, an offence not to "assist persons in danger". In Switzerland, a local told me it was crazy to assist as a private individual, beyond calling the emergency services, as I could be sued if things went further wrong.

I suppose he should know. He was a doctor.

I presume that's the entrance to the tunnel so people driving into wouldn't be able to see very much as their eyes adjusted. You also get older people who really have very poor contrast and people with reactive lenses in their glasses which take some time to adjust. Indeed the biker may have had a tinted visor.

In Spain, it is a legal requirement to stop at the scene of an accident in order to assist.
Obviously that has to be tempered by common-sense: if there are assistees already dealing, more stopped cars would not be sensible.

No different to this country, many drivers haven't the foggiest idea whats going on anywhere round them other than the space between them and the vehicle in front, which isn't much due to tailgaiting.

They were going from bright sunshine into a tunnel, but the tunnel looks very well lit, probably on a par with most of ours anyway.

One of my crossing on the Norfolk Ferry got talking to a Dutch chap who had been travelling in the South of England on his motorbike.

I noticed his bike was damaged and asked him what had happened. He told me he skidded and went flying across the road.As luck would have it a nurse ans a fieman stopped and gave him first aid.He ended up at being invited at the firemans house for the night to get over the shock.

I don't know the rules in Switzerland but if I see anybody getting injured or hurt I stop to help.I never forgive myself not to common decency.

I feel exactly the same.

I have heard the same warning re when a doctor is called for on flights.
My daughter, a doctor always responds to " is there a medical doctor onboard,,,,," ( they have to include the word medical ) and that is a situation, unlike a road accident, where others cannot assist only over the airwaves.

A couple of times when I have been her taxi we have screamed to a halt and she has sprinted off to help. To see her take command and treat the injured made me proud that she is so dedicated and professional inspite of her being in a totally different sphere of the medical world.
She went to assist an Aussie who had collapsed on the tube station to find there were several other docs there, all having also been at the same cricket match.
The black humour was that he could not find a better place to keel over - with so many skilled medics nearby.

Reminds me of stand-up comedian Shelley Birman, "Have ever been any where where there was NOT a doctor in the house? God, they get around!"

And the only time, as a (then) qualified first aider, I went to help a woman who had walked though plate glass window and sustained a deep cut on her arm, only to have a nurse intervene immediately.

Same in Germany.

I saw a motorcyclist drive into the back of a car last year, think I mentioned it on here. My first instinct was to run across to help him, my second was to get my mobile phone out of my pocket and phone an ambulance. The area was full of teenagers, whose first instinct appeared to be to get their phones out and start filming the event - but I guess that's a different thread.

A friend was involved in a nasty accident on his bike in France last week, the following car (British) stopped and assisted - least one can expect...
