Even the smallest 4 seater Cessna 172 costs $300,000 to buy.
Do they actually cost that much to make or some flying tax is added to the price?

Large complicated items produced on a small scale.
They are never going to be cheap.

Hand-built - makes a Bugatti or a McLaren look expensive.

I too am puzzled by the high price. They are hand built, in that I din't think robots are involved, and thousands of Cessnas have been built. Also, SFAIK, they buy the engines in ready to fit (Lyoming, Continental etc) so they are still expensive but there are economies in numbers built and I am sure there are robots involved in engine production. In the 50s one could buy a Tiger Moth with a year's C of A for £200!
