Chemical stripping of car bodies - bathtub tom
I've seen a couple of telly programs where a stripped car body shell's submerged into a tank of liquid (acid?) to strip all paint.

After rinsing, it then gets a rudimentary coat of primer sprayed to 'prevent corrosion'.

What happens to the inside surfaces of box sections? They've been stripped of any protection, rinsed in water presumably and then left to the atmosphere.

As an aside, when were body shells first dipped in a bath of primer? I assume before then internal box sections would've been bare metal like the way I saw them making Aston Martins back in the '70s.

I would imagine after dipping and rinsing they are hot-dried prior to the priming/painting.

I've seen this done on progs like American Hotrods. They don't have to worry about corrosion as the finished article won't see any salt, probably no rain, and probably not even get driven more than once a year.

Here you go:

Not quite as simple as just a dip in acid and a rinse off.

That's impressive. I wonder what it costs?

I don't think it's cheap especially as they need to zinc coat the stripped body before you get it back, but Practical Classics magazine now seem to begin each new restoration by using it. This always seems a bit of a cheat to me as they're supposed to be showing us what we could do at home on a limited budget.

Dunno about these days, but back in the late 70's early 80's the acid dip was done to British Touring cars.... some I understand were left in a little longer than was required to lose the paint....

And also apparently a rollcage was made from exhaust pipe - almost killing one of the drivers in an attempt to save weight.
