...Is that yours Iffy?...

It is, 37' x 12', so a proper little home from home.

Central heating, double glazing, en-suite in the main bedroom, full-size kitchen appliances, beds and other furniture.

But it's still a tin box, no static is very cosy when the weather's cold, although it is watertight.

We bought a 30' X 12' Carnaby Hacenda in Bexhill (Little Common) when we came back from Tenerife in the 90's,
it was on a freehold site, so we owned the plot and paid no fees!

Our intention was to live there from May to October, then fly South for the Winter (the plans of mice and men etc.)

That period - effectively the old-fashioned caravan season - is doable in comfort, particularly in the warmer south.

Most sites are now open ten or eleven months, mine is closed in January and February.

A few people do the full ten months, but it's hard in the winter, whatever they say.

The retired couple opposite me were without water - frozen pipes - for about six weeks last winter.

The toilet bowl froze for a short period, so they couldn't even ablute by carrying water in.

Particularly up in the North East I dare say! ... we spent a winter in our Hymer once,
layed in bed with the propane heating on watching the 9" Grundig :)

The condensation damaged some fabrics though, so I wouldn't recommend it, not in the Northern hemisphere anyway.

Condensation in caravans - that's another topic on which I could write a book.

Not too bad in mine, there's usually just me in it.

There are small vents in the floor of most rooms.

Some people block them in a bid to make the caravan warmer, and then wonder why they have water running down the walls.

Another tip is not to pack the wardrobes and drawers with clothes because some air around each item helps prevent mould.

The worse condensation was under the foam mattress on the overhead bed, it caused black mould and ruined the mattress and wooden base,

I sold the Hymer shortly afterwards to a Northern couple (I told them) who owned a b&b down The Lizard (Naturalists) who (she) used to drive to Portugal every winter, nice!


Funilly enough, I'm a stickler for ventilation (even now) but I still got that condensation.

Can't think why anyone would be interested, but it's the telly aerial, which thanks to a splitter inside, is also now serving as a DAB aerial for the mini system.

I agree. Nothing beats an Airstream as a shedavan, except possibly a genuine gipsy caravan.

The best of all I think was the old American railway carriage that used to be on display at the American Museum near Bristol. It was either the authentic one that Lincoln used on his electioneering tours, or a genuine contemporary.
It had been withdrawn when I was there last year, for repair I hope.

Ours is just a £50 Sprite Alpine from about 1970. We have gradually stopped using it for real holidays, so it is gradually turning into another static summer house in the garden.
