When I was but a lad, I was able to point out all the different "Marks" of Fords, from Escorts to Cortinas. I could identify a Mark 3 or Mark Five etc.

However nowadays cars are known by codes, I often read about certain E-versions of BMWs for instance which mean nothing to me.

What is the industry standard now? Do Ford still use "Marks"?

Yes but some muppets can't figure them out. They get confused by Marks and facelifts.

For example, Focus Mk1 followed by a facelift. Focus Mk2 2004/5. followed by a facelift. We are now on the Focus Mk3.

Nothing has changed though. Ford still use the 'mark' term for different revisions of a model with some confusion over some (was the revised Mondeo in 2003 a mark 3 or 4?).

BMW always used the E-numbers for cars like E46, E90 etc. Even if you don't know the current BMW 5-series is an F10 and the previous one an E60. And the one before an E39.

So seeing as the new BMW is an F10.... that messes up your view of BMWs no-end! Although ws the Exx/Fxx the start of the chassis number of similar? We'll get to G sometime then.

EDIT: Just looked it up and the short/long wheelbase 7-series is F01/F02.

The BMW E numbers are internal model designations not really for the end user. Just the same as Rover used the SD1 as an internal designation for the Rover 3500 and its varients, but it ended up as "public" shorthand - even some people adapted the one to an i so SD1 became SDi which meant nothing at all.

Mercedes as well. The first 6 characters of the VIN on my W124 are "WDB124". The DB is for Daimler-Benz.

The 1 Series 5dr, 3dr, coupe and cabriolet have different E numbers though all are based on the same chassis.

Strangley the 5dr is E87 though the 3dr is E81 despite being introduced three or so years later.

The previous 5 series was the first BMW that ended the link between 'chassis' and variant codes IIRC (E60/E61), though the 1 series (as above) and 3 series (E90/91/92/93) soon followed. Probably why they ran out of 'E's and had to move on to 'F' ;-)

This issue made buying some parts for my 1997 Escort rather difficult, as it was a Mk5, a Mk6 or a Mk7 depending on which seller I used. I reckon it was a Mk7 as it had the final nose shape with the all-glass one-piece headlight/indicator units.

Just to compound the problem, Ford radically altered the Escort's engines and electrics from 1998 onwards when they produced them alongside the Focus for another two years.

That's the same site that said my old Mondeo mk2 LX was actually a GLX. Chassis numbers, colour, engine etc were all correct though.

Two explanations - it was wrong, or I was driving a ringer. :-(

I suppose a previous owner could have thought the GLX was just too flashy and ostentatious, and downgraded it to an LX, swapping out the exterior badges, wheels, and pretty much the entire interior.....
