British blues singer, married for many years to Chris Barber, has died aged 79. I know I heard her live, perhaps more than once, but can't remember when or where. A voice and much-admired jazz 'face' of my youth. RIP.
Lots of voice and a demure stage manner. She was complimented by the great gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe with the words: 'You ain't nothing but a white n*****!'
It's a great misfortune for a jazz or blues or rock musician to be physically fragile, as Ottilie Patterson was. Touring and playing late nights in clubs are very gruelling in the long run. She lost her voice and retired many years ago.

She had a truly great jazz voice.
A sad loss.
I too, saw her live, more years ago than I can remember.
She was still married to Chris Barber then - before his band became "modernish".
Trad jazz was the only music I really enjoyed in the late 50s and early 60s.
I also heard Ken Colyer live, at the Nottingham Arts Ball and still remember the explosive impact of the original Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazzband made on us at the jazz club in the Tent Bridge Inn.
I also remember a very young Johhny (John now!) Crocker guesting with the resident band there.
