I'm going out later this morning to by wood protecting for our fence.
Is it true what it says on the tin? Problaby popping into Home Base and B&Q.
Thanks for any advice.

If the fence panels have been pressure treated (Tanalised) just stick anything on for colour (or nowt at all)
|
Thanks Dog they have been treated.I have a look keeps me busy.
|
I painted our shed this blue wood preserver last year and now a neighbour has just put up a shed and painted it same colour!!!
Wouldn't mind i did it cos it was free got it given. lol.
Old engine oil i used on the fence years ago mixed with then cresote it never really dries out and kept the wood supple not like these wood preservers as it's so dry.

Second the creosote and old engine oil, much better than the other stuff and makes good use of the waste oil.
Creosote also smells great unlike the new stuff.

S'right - I use it as aftershave, and it drives the Women wild!
|
I prefer the creosote like fluids that soak in. The coloured types evertually flake/wear off leaving patches which are harder to re-treat.
I really like the look of old wood that's been creosoted over the years but achieved an almost grey weathered look.
Looking at houses currently and some folks have gone overboard with the colour stuff. One recently had blue fences, shed & gazebo with orange decking.

Trouble is I can never mix it so it dries fully, and a slightly tacky shed that leaves dirty oil marks on those who touch it doesn't do down well with the household kids and pets.
|
The main trouble with creosote is its toxicity to plant life. If you intent to grow anything against the fence or near the fence don't use it. As a gardener I wouldn't use the stuff.
|
Joking apart - I have previously had very good results from using Cuprinol Ducksback,
It can't be sprayed on I believe AND it's relatively expensive but - I'd use it again if need be.

Is that on the tanning/after shave front ?

C'mon man - you know I don't shave, and have an Olive (oil?) complexion.
:o}
|
I was under the impression that creosote had been banned several years ago - has it been 'un-banned'?
|
No its still banned for retail sale although commercial customers, farmers and the like can still buy it.
|
We have a veg patch next to the oil cresote fence and were still kicking but understand what you mean.
Cresote does smell gorgeous. whats the new stuff called? is it crecoat or something like that.
|
Its Creotec Bigtee I never used to like the smell. But after all the chemo I've had over the last two years It smells ok.I got 4litres.Also some timbercare. The Creotec is oil based 11 pounds.
It be going on this afternoon forecast for tomorrow rain.
|
This stuff smells the same as Creosote CG Norwich must something else then.
|
Thanks appreciated for that having toast and a cup of tea now don't feel like doing out.;)
|
I mix creocote and old oil and it goes twice as far and lasts a lot longer.... The colour is the same and it smells of engines...

I prefer Cuprinol Shed and Fence Protector. It penetrates, unlike water based products which eventually peel off. www.cuprinol.co.uk/products/shed_and_fence_protector_overview.jsp
The cheapest supplier is usually Wilkinsons.
