Panasonic DVD recorder often needs retuning - Meldrew
I have a very good Panasonic DVD/VHS recorder player. It is connected to the mains all the time but, periodically, when I switch it on it says "New system found Do you wish to Auto re-tune?" I say Yes and after a couple of minutes and has set up 100+ channels and away I go. I think I have set it to record while have been away for a week and nothing has been recorded because the tuning has gone. This should not happen should it? Out of warranty BTW!

There is nothing wrong with it, the powers that be keep adding and changing and swapping TV channels, and your box is simply finding them and asking you to re-tune to receive them. It can only do this by a full retune of all channels.

It has a freeview tuner in it so I guess that there could be regular changes and updates. What you describe sound like a very good explanation - thank you.

We still have three dates in late summer/autumn where we need to re-tune to complete digital switchover for Sandy Heath. My Sharp digital telly however tells me regularly tha it needs a re-tune.

Probably to accomadate the ever growing cluster of BBD type channels now on DTTV!!

Sound like it's got retune-itus!

Yes there are changes from time to time and if you either receive from somewhere that is going through switchover, or can pick one up, even if you don't watch it, then retunes are bit more frequent.

As you write though, it sounds as though you are asked to do this too often. I've met an otherwise excellent Panasonic TV that did this from new.

Yes, I had to retune it this morning about 8am and than again at 1.30 before I recorded something

System information changes are seldom done at the weekend, only likely if something catastrophic has been discovered, so Zero's diagnosis is most likely correct (unless everybody else has been over-run with retunes today).

As an aside, is there an option to turn off automatic update/retune buried in a menu somewhere?

Thanks JH, it doesn't automatically retune - it tells me it has found new settings (ie the old ones have dies I suppose) and asks me if I want to retune it. Luckily it has a 5 year warranty from Richer Sounds from whom I bought it. 5 years of repair or replace for 10% of the purchase price and you get the premium back at the end of 5 years if you haven't made a claim. I must try and find the receipt!!!!!

Finding "new settings" and asking for a retune should be caused by changes in the "system information" - there is a section on "Digitalspy" devoted to those changes...

is channel spelled five, 5, or FIVE?
has a new service appeared, or an existing one gone?
which multiplex a service is on?

really mundane/anorak stuff, but no changes in the last day or two that I noticed:

Your trip to Richer's seems to be in order.
