SWMBO's moaning about about our old 4:3 CRT telly. I can just hear what sounds like an HT hum if I get very close to it. It seems to be emanating from the body of the beast, not the speakers.
Any suggestions as to how I might reduce the noise to keep her happy?
My hearing means I don't need expensive audio gear. ;>)

Buy her a new telly.

Or learn to live with it.
We had a similar problem with our last bedroom telly, but this was only noticeable when we had the volume fairly low, and it didn't seem deteriorate as the telly got older.

15,625 Hz? Line output transformer (LOPT) noise. Most men won't hear it, but the female sex has a higher frequency limit. Falls off with age as well, some female children can hear over 20,000 Hz but it's rare for males.
Set's can make this noise and not be otherwise faulty so could carry on for years. A replacement LOPT can cure it but not worth it. New TV time.

If it is a hum, then at could be a capacitor - the big one, about 5" long and as round as a £2 coin,
If it's a high pitched noise then it's most likely the transformer and you could try wedging a small piece of wood between it and some component nearby.

If the noise is new you have two reasonably sensible options:
ear plugs (as discussed in a thread a few weeks ago) or a new TV.
Old TV's aren't really economic for somebody else to repair, or especially safe to play with yourself, unless you know what you're about.

>> High-pitched hum from TV
... is just about the size of it, in the round.
The quantum jump in picture quality with digital broadcasting, these lcd screens and HD and all that palaver, has so far outstripped the bulk of what is broadcast, the actual content of the high-pitched hum so to speak, that the whole phenomenon, which has a global effect, has a surrealist feel... like a pink plastic bog brush (used) roughly mounted on a sheet of iridescent lurex in a solid gold and ivory frame.

Have you been at the Absinthe again AC?

>> been at the Absinthe again ?
Be careful or I won't keep you a taste of the calva...
... but are you seriously claiming that the text is more often than not, or even just fairly often, really worthy of its setting? There are things one can watch obviously. But just think of all the others and the way one goes no-no-no-no-no through most of the channels.

+1
I doubt if fixing is cost effective, so it's either a fancy new widescreen HD blah blah flat panel or the cheap route is to look out for an old CRT, round my way there's nearly always someone flogging a decent (in its day) Sony or Panasonic CRT for 20-30 quid.

Plenty of free ones on Freecycle! Particularly 28" +. But make sure that you have helpers around to move/load it!
For £10you should be able to get a CRT Sony with Digital and Analogue tuners on Ebay. But the Digital tuner may have a limited life as early Sony were not fully standards compliant.

Yeah, mate of mine paid about 800 quid for a 'future proof' analogue/Freeview Sony set, two years later and it wouldn't work on Freeview ( I think it was the split NIT that confused it). A quick Google revealed lots of Sony models that can't handle current Freeview line-up. Still OK with a 15 quid external Freeview box of course.

Mr Sony does seem to have issues with changes which are compliant with the specifications:
recently 12 weeks to sort the software on some 2010-2011 TV's to give uninterrupted audio with the interlaced/non-interlaced HD offerings.
But at least they got there this time.

Have you tride giving the tv a bit of a slap, BT? My cheapo dab radio develops a buzzing noise from time to time, but a sharp slap on the right hand side of the case soon stops it.

Yeah, works on SWMBO as well.
:o}
