"Is the British roundabout conquering the US?"

" Some drivers in Carmel have been known to wait for the whole roundabout to clear before entering, "
but
" This is a culture predicated on freedom and individualism, where spontaneous co-operation is difficult and regimentation is resisted. "

I was warned, warned mark you, by a B&B owner in Gloucester Maine about the dangers "Driving Circle" on the outskirts of town - this is the town that reared generations of Tuna fishermen - wonder if they got a discount on their fuel..?
I would say that roundabouts are perfectly suited to the rural American psyche - their 4 way junctions just work in a way they would never do in the UK.
|
Yup, a four way stop works perfectly well there, and is well suited to their lazy driving style. Here it would be a disaster.

It's a disaster there if a certain kind of Brit is driving - I spent a week on a business trip with my then boss a few years ago and he just ignored the protocol completely. He couldn't for the life of him understand why you would wait when you could simply take the first chance to go!

Hospitality people can be funny. The owner of the farm cottage in wales said "Oh so you found us all right then" - as tho no-one has made it there before.
I replied "yes I used Google earth and sat nav to find it" From the look on his face i think that translates in welsh "Aliens just transported us here by tractor beam"
|
A tractor beam would have totally different meaning around here.
|
Zero is an urbanite, I suspect the only tractors he is familiar with are the Chelsea variety.
|
You wouldn't say that if you could have seen me and fifi herding the Welsh Blacks out of the way on our way to the beach,
Put me in BBD's cowboy boots, and on a horse and I make John Wayne look like a city gay bar crawler.
|
Oh dear, chasing Welsh sheep, good job you were under supervision. :-)
|
Welsh Blacks are cows :-)

TuTut talk about city slicker!
|
Oops, OK so you are a bit ambitious. :-)
That's my London upbringing, and this is an arable farm area. My excuse anyway.
|
I got cow poo on BBDs boots tho.
|
Now that is living dangerously.

And it would have adjustable track width.

The only round about in the US I came across was in Clearwater Florida.
Went fine.
