Now that I am definitely keeping the Altea, I would like to get a holder for my ipod classic to position it in a higher area of the dashboard. Currently I have it down in the cup holder.

Brodit do just the thing I think I am looking for, one of these
www.amazon.co.uk/Brodit-ProClip-Center-mount-Toledo/dp/B004LOLSOI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306699016&sr=8-1

and one of these
www.amazon.co.uk/DSL-Brodit-Classic-Brodit-Attachment-Countries/dp/B001M0EKKI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306698976&sr=8-1

However, the brodit seems to work on the principle of prising apart tight fits of trim and jamming a bit of metal between them. I am concerned this will just lead to squeaking and rattling.

Anyone used the Brodit mounts, am I worrying unnecessarily?

I do have a slight reservation with the mounting in that it is very visible to tealeafs as opposed to down in the cupholder. I usually hide the actual ipod when parked but the holder kind of advertises that there is one in the car?

Thoughts?

I have used Brodit clips in both my Focus and Ceed, they do not damage the cars trim and give a solid vibration free mounting. They do advertise the possible cars contents to the low life, I only fit mine when using my satnav for long distance or out of area travel.

I have a Brodit clip on the Mazda6 for the car kit. So a lot heavier than the iPod. I didn't pick the clip but this was an expensive professional install which also integrates into the stereo. Now to get to the back of the stereo on a Mazda6 you have to remove all of the stereo dash starting with... the gear knob. It's involved. But you'd think they'd know what works for holding the phone brackets.

Anyway 3.75 years later the Brodit clip is still in place so seems to work well. I might get one for the Passat CC for the phone when I get it. Just to hold it mind as it has Bluetooth for phones/audio streaming.

I didn't have a clue what a Brodit clip was so didn't even read this thread until today, but having looked it up I can confirm the Mondeo came to me with one, although all it carries is the featherweight Parrot kit screen. No squeaks, rattles or other problems, although it does sit directly across one of the air vents which I'd prefer it didn't. I can't see anywhere else to mount the Parrot screen so it'll have to stay where it is, it's pretty substantial and I can't see any reason not to recommend one.

ON you sure that's a Brodit then? The sort BobbyG refers to is as good as a permanent mount without the damage. And easily removed.

Easily removed is the key bit, with care they make a good mount occasionalonal use. I also use the windscreen suction mount for the satnav, or it sits in the centre console depending on what I am using it for. The Ceed does the Bluetooth and Ipod thing, (whatever they are) so the satnav is only used for long distance journey times or finding specific locations that I am not familiar with.

You want a new car but you cant have one, and you want a decent IPOd integration?

Kill two birds with one stone. Buy a new head unit with built in IPOD integration and control the IPOD from the radio.

And change those effin speakers!

I am trying to trace down a black Altea XL which was last seen with modified speakers and a split level boot floor .... :)

Grrrrrrr!!! Had forgotten about that.

Anything else? Maybe a superchip as well?

that was it

Seriously, tho, think about a complete ICE upgrade, its like having a new car.

In reality most of my journeys are commuting to and from work and I usually listen to the news at that time.
Outwith commuting, I am trying to listen to the ipod more and more as I am finding music radio stations full of DJs trying to make a name for themselves, talking drivel etc.

So much as a full upgrades sounds good (pardon the pun), I couldn't justify it to myself never mind anyone else!

An alternative is to use CD-RW disks for music CD's if you have an auto-changer. Change the content when you get bored.

That is what I do and have done since about 2000. Next car has an SD card slot so won't bother with an iPod/MP3 connection via the VAG MDI interface. But could plug in via 3.5mm jack or use Bluetooth audio streaming.

You say that now, but wait till you get it. I made the mistake of not ordering MDI. Ended up retro fitting it!

Suppose it depends on how much you change your music. I like podcasts so it's a weekly thing. Prefer the:

1. plug in ipod to computer
2. unplug ipod

To the:

1. Mess about
2. Mess about some more
3. Copy files, making up a directory structure manually on the SD
4. etc. etc.

This is thread drift as usual ;-)

I tried an SD card on the Passat's RNS-315 system and all I did was copy some artists music folders. The RNS-315 picked them all up okay but I think it uses the MP3 meta tag data in the files. I will test in October when I get a new car.

And for me, I don't swap what I like to listen to in car that often. And there's always the option to take a CD-RW with MP3 out one morning.

In fact I don't want to have to scroll through all I have on my phone/iPod when in car to find what I want to listen to. I often scroll through the subset of music on the 16Gb memory card on my phone at the gym.... and tend to play my current favourite albums.

The plan for the car is to have music I like on a memory card.... and music we both like on another. Keeping both to a minimum. Might even go for 4Gb cards or smaller.

I agree with Skoda upthread - the VAG MDI interface is great. I would have thought that the Altea could have this fitted?

I bought a 250GB Hard Drive, and simply copied loads of music folders onto it from my PC.
Hundreds of albums on there and still 80% free.

You simply plug it in to the unit in the glove compartment.
Everything is seamlessly controlled through the car, the same as playing CD's or the radio.

Nah, it cant without a new head unit.

RCD-510's aren't worth much second hand (~£150?) and they're frequently upgraded where they come as standard fit.

Not sure if the Altea's the same, but when fitting to an older octy, the canbus controller needs upgrading to a later revision at the same time to avoid a flat battery problem.

Can avoid the hassle of fitting a new canbus controller if you know someone with Vag Can Pro (not the same as Vagcom / VCDS) who can flash the newer firmware onto the existing unit in situ.

The Altea does not use the RCD 510, its a unique unit. Used in the Mk2 leon, Altea and Toldeo only, nowhere esle in the VAG stable.

Just an update, ordered and received the Brodit clips and fitted it tonight. Took all of 2 mins!

Looks good and solid, will see tomorrow how it does when I am driving. The position in my car is quite close to the indicator so hopefully won't bump it when signalling.

The one I have in the Mazda6 is still stuck there. Come October that's 4 years so they seem to stick.

Some lanky g*t knocked it off with his knee once or twice but it stuck back.

I will seriously consider a holder for my phone in the ordered Passat CC. I wonder what I will be told to do with the old car kit in the Mazda... it will cost to take out and not needed. A new holder (swappable with the THB system) and it will work with many phones including an iPhone.
