It will be interesting to see what value they put on the freedom and ability to go when/where you want, which is the main benefit of car ownership, and one which public transport or car club ownership totally fails.

If you have the time and the bandwidth on your connection it will probably be here:

after the event.

I know to nearest penny how much my car costs me. Its a fortune and I miss the money I used to have to spend on holidays etc but having a car makes me life and running my business so much easier. In fact how my dad is working if had didn't have car I think it would be impossible to run my business because there would be no lifts when I need to carry heavy computer equipment.

Its fine when I could do everything onsite as bueses and trams were ok for that but it was very inconvient. For example getting just 4-5 miles down the road could take well over an hour in the evening on the bus where as in the car that is a 15 minute journey.

With rising insurance costs though there is going to be a point where I simply cannot affford to run th car anymore. I think that point will be if it reaches £1500.

No im sure your going to be safe..............

Most of of the last quotes I got already exceed that. I can see it easily reaching £2000 a year unless the law changes to stop all these accident management companies inventing bogus injuries etc.

so it costs more than 100 pounds a week to keep a car and thats before you turn the key? according to the show

i dont spend half that and that includes petrol, honest some people must walk / drive around in a dream world, either that or they have more money than sense !!!

I didn't see the program on "the true cost of a car", and it doesn't appear to be on ITV iplayer.
Has anyone got the formula that they used, please?

PS. I watched the program on the A303. I lived down that way for a time, and it bought back a few memories.

46p per mile.
The true cost of a car - Statistical Outlier
Total cost of my Accord from new over the first three years was 33p / mile (about 25k miles a year). That's every penny out of my pocket relating to the car.

I then bought it out of the PCP for £5k, and have needed only scheduled maintenance since, so no idea what it has cost in the last 2.5 years, other than not much.

Pay 8k for car 18 months old keep it 10 years it owes you for looking after it.
