Did some ground testing not reveal any problems ?

and were they flying this decrepit old wreck anyway ?

Doubt they would have bothered, if you have to buy aircraft that are 35 years old, in Russia and haven't flown in ten years you're on a shoestring.

When I fly, I fly on the basis that the pilots want to survive the trip as well and will eliminate as much of the risk as possible

I've flown in an elderly Ilyushin, in Algeria. But it had propellers.

That film clip is absolutely terrifying.

I came across this on an aviation forum where I lurk. The post there did not mention that this was a test flight, and after ten years of not having flown. The flight, amazingly, led to a survivable landing and minimal damage to the airframe. Clearly the Russian pilots are brave and skilled and the aircraft are very strongly built!

A friend said to me he always feels safer with a Russian Pilot, there is no form of flight emergency they have not experienced in real life!

A Russian pilot in a very modern aircraft for me please.

They weren't just having a bit of fun were they?

Very scary.....

Shoestring budget versus safety = accident waiting to happen.

I can assure you that all pilots want to survive and will not fly anything that they think will not return them to the ground safely.......

A friend of mine used to share lodgings with trainee Soviet pilots in Kiev, whilst I was studying in Moscow. I used to visit regularly as they had cheese and beer in the shops in Kiev at state prices, whereas Moscow was pretty much bereft of all supplies other than black market.

Those trainees told us that all pilots would take a shot of vodka for good luck before take off. A traditional good bye custom when leaving someone's house (in case you were never seen again).

...whilst I was studying in Moscow...

Don't mention that when you land at Logan International.

Well I am not nor ever have I been a member of The Communist Party.

I was, however, a member of the Conservative Party once.

I have travelled to the States since my days in the USSR, with a passport showing extensive Soviet entry/exit stamps. Never a problem. Especially no these days, I expect. Commies? Not much of a threat any more.
