Did anyone else notice that the big Rolls Royce limo that took some of the guests to Westminster Abbey (Queen & Prince Philip I think) had no number plates or tax disc? Now if you or I were to drive round that part of London at 10mph with no plates or disc, you can be sure that one of the many policemen around today would have pulled us. Or is the Queen exempt from her own Highway rules? Reply to this message | Report message

If I recall my college lectures, I think the Queen is exempt from all laws, not just motoring. She could commit the most awful of crimes and get away with it. Throw stones at a neighbour's house.....drop empty lager cans up the Mall.....no Asbos for Lizzie. I think it had to do with the fact that prosecutions are brought in the Queens name....... If I can wean this thread off what looks like a design competition for prison uniform, wasn't the RR that Charles and Camilla arrived in absolutely glorious! I think it was made specially for the present Queen's wedding in 1947. It seemed to have a spare wheel on the front wing, which I'd thought was the mark of a pre-war Rolls. I don't think it's uncommon usage - by which I mean I do it. I'm from the county of the white rose though. "A good cause would do well, though." Thomas Dryden. I agree about loose and loosing for lose and losing. How can anybody attain majority without noticing the right spelling? We should all agree that it's rude to point out poor grammar and spelling in forum posts, but I stumble every time I see that one - probably because it's not just mispelt, it has another meaning that rarely fits the context. Another thing: I thought everyone knew the monarch didn't need a number plate on an official or state car. After all one would have thought the prominent coat of arms above the windscreen, discreet second vehicle full of heavies and six motorbike outriders would do for identification purposes, in case they all exceeded the speed limit, ploughed through a bus stop crowded with schoolchildren or tried a bit of drive-by grease gun action outside the republican party HQ... It was nice to see the Old Man's Aston out again (I saw a pic in the DT). I recall reading in one of Alan Clark's books how he poked fun at HRH when he saw him stranded one night on the Hammersmith flyover with an electrical problem. Not unknown with Astons. (Hale Books). Not sure if it's been published yet. It's a fascinating read but the crash rate is shocking. Of the Empire Flying Boat Fleet (43) Scrapped - 16 Crashed - 18 Destroyed by enemy action - 6 And the rest destroyed by fire/gale/accidents on the ground. You wouldn't get me in one.
