Never was much good with electricity...

My Slingbox power adapter has broken - the earth pin has detached itself from the case. I can plug in the unattahce pin to open the shutters on teh plug socket then plug in the (now) two pins. It was working like this for ages, but has been off for a month or two and will not now power up on this adapter.

The Slingbox says on the bottom 6VDC @ 2.4A. There's a graphic showing the centre of the connector is positive.

I have a multi adapter bought years ago where I can dial in 6V and set the polarity correctly. It says 300mA3.6VA(max) on it.

So when I set it up the green power light goes on on the Slingbox. But the Slingbox will not recognise a network cable, which has been tested in another device. I.e. the network light does not light up, and I have no connectivity.

Is the new adapter capable of finding the right amperage?

And if not, could that cause the device to appear to be on but not work? Or have I got another fault?

And where can I source a reasonably cheap replacement, if this one is no good?

No, not by a very long way, you are at least 2 amps short and your power adaptor will be shutting down due to the strain.

Maplins? Will be quite dear, 2.6 amps is actually quite a hefty load.

This will almost certainly do the job, although it would be nice to have a bit of current capacity in hand i.e. 3A rather than 2.5A max.

Thanks - bit pricier than I'd hoped because the device itself may well not get much use. It's for watching my home PVR while I'm stuck away on work. What with Yotube and iPlayer etc I can probably live without it at that price.

Looks like Slingbox in the States supply OEM replacements for 20 bucks, but can't see any UK availability.

TBH, with the advent of View again on demand services, PVR's and live streaming on www.tvcatchup.com (yes they have Iphone and Ipad versions) slingbox only has life as a doorstop.

Sort of, but with the TiVo catching all sorts of stuff which I didn't ask it to record but am happy to watch (via it's fantastic Suggestions functionality) it's handy to be able to watch my own recorded stuff when I am away - not least because to leave it until I had time to watch would soon fill the disk, what with being away 5 nights a week. Slingbox depends on a reasonably stable internet connection though, which is sometimes hard to find in hotels. It's pretty good at adapting itself to slower connections, such that watching on my 7" netbook has been quite acceptable. A larger screen would probably not be so good.

If I'd known about the US ones I could have got one in March...still could I suppose but shipping cost is probably prohibitive.

This is a bit cheaper and has more oomph in the amps department, but I can't quickly see what polarity/size the one output connector is:-
