My 6 year old Lexmark inkjet printer which came 'free' with my MESH computer has died (RIP)

I was looking to replace it with a Canon Pixma MP495 for about £50.

Any suggestions please (preferably clean)

:)

What took you so long?

When I'm feeling 'top notch' (like today) I can work like 3 men and think like a sooper computer,

It's all down to positive nutrition (as you know!)

Canon IP range - my IP4600 was top pf PC Pro mag's A-List two years ago and current IP4850 is still top banana, if over your budget. www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/printers/360409/canon-pixma-ip4850

I have an IP4000R, about 5 - 6 years old now.

www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Printers/Inkjet/PIXMA_iP4000R/

The "R" is important, it is 802.11 wifi compatible and hence sits as a wireless device on our network and is used by various PC's around the house wirelessly, later printers in the "IP" range don't feature wifi AFAIK* though I think some of the multifunction "MP" range do.

If it were to pack up then I would look to another Canon though it would have to be wifi.

EDIT: *There was also an IP5200R.

I have the IP5000 which is still going strong and produces excellent output. Comes with two black ink cartridges (photo and text/general) with the larger black one making printing normal documents cheaper and the ink is more suited to those sort of prints. Also prints on CDs/DVDs and does duplex printing.

Mine must be of a similar age to Cheddar's IP4000. How time flies.

Yes the 4000, 5000 and 4000R are the same generation, they look the same and all use the same 5 inks, the 5000 is nominally higher resolution though the 4000 and 4000R were 5* at the time.

I went for the 4000R for its wifi capabilities despite it being rather more expensive than the other two at the time.

Re the OP, it's not for me btw - it's for another Dog I know, a mongrel actually,
it wants a cheapy as it only uses a printer twice a year to send birthday & Xmas cards to its partner,

How some animals act amazes me really, blimmin cheapskate tightfisted steward of the bar.

I have an MP495 at home - bought it a few months ago, and just coming to the end of the first black cartridge.

I use it wireless fron a number of different laptops.

Printing is reasonably prompt.

Scanning is unbelievably slow - lots a faffing about "initialising" - but once it actually gets to scanning it's OK, but there's something not right about the process/preamble.

Also, the setting up of the wireless was a bit odd/not terribly intuitive: I can't remember the exact words, but the instructions were talking about a specific lead to use to set up the wireless. It turned out to need nothing more than the supplied USB lead, but somebody wants their Chinglish translator re-writing.

Having said all that, it's good value for an "all in one" scanner/printer with wireless functionality

I take it my mates Dog doesn't have to use it wirelessly, only he's a funny sort of Dog and over-concerns itself with health issues relating to microwave radiation, and that.

He doesn't even have a mobile bone (haha!) can you believe it!!

AFAIR the decision about wireless or wired is made during the setting up.

As previously mentioned there's a USB lead provided with it.

I expect he won't need to contend with the frightening blue light pronouncing "Wi-Fi" using it wired :-)

Two friends are having good results with the Epson sx125. Widely available @ £30 and, in my view, with the additional advantage of having one black and 3 colour cartridges. Scan/Copy/Print and no problems in a year of light use.

One advantage with Canon printers is you get new nozzles fitted in a replacement ink cartridge. Our Canon MP560 is used both USB and WIFI depending on who is using it.

I ordered the Canon Pixma MP495 which is a major step in the right direction,
compared to my 6 year old Lexmark freebie.

ON that depends om the printer. My Canon printer has simple cheap ink cartridges. There is a separate print head.

Too late for Dog but has anyone here tried a Kodak printer ?

We have gotten to the point where the Epson is just damned annoying drinking like an alchie so we looked at the options above, priced the cartridges for the recommendations (this is not a dig) and opted for a Kodak ESP 7250. Installation couldn't be simpler, pull the orange tapes off, install the cartridges and connect to WiFi.

Only minors glitches, install pack complained of a network failure because the firewall wouldn't play ball.
When I selected install latest drivers from the internet, avast! fired off four times at their install CD.

18 months ago I bought a Hewlett Packard all-in-one printer with separate ink cartridges. It was a disaster - I never managed to get all the ink cartridges working at once, mainly because it cleaned itself so often they just emptied. And a set cost 50 euros a throw! The HP user forum was full of people complaining about the same problem. I will never ever buy a Hewlett Packard product again and I've vowed to tell everyone this sorry tale at every opportunity. Canon for me next time perhaps.
