Well did you get your black eared vrs????
|
Yeah :-) DSG is the best invention ever. Will fire up some pics tomorrow. Although, I just went for the clutch in a car park much to my embarrassment. I thought I was over that carry on with auto's :-)
They've made a couple of refinements in the past year.
Where's the other guy with good taste on here? I forget his screenname because he's not posted in so long. BMW & octy owner with a new octy dsg on order. He must have his by now? Plays the organ I'm sure I read him say once. Can't believe I've forgotten such a man of good taste's name!

You are thinking of "Avant."
Yes he has good taste. He chose the name of an Audi! :-)
|
Avant, that's the man. Hope he's enjoying his too!
Fuel economy appears to be up by 5mpg+ and i've not been babying it in the running in. I suppose it's because it's never tempted to exploit the turbo for no good reason in 'D' mode 'S' mode is a bit dramatic for when other people are around. Flappy paddles are great fun, although i'd already discovered that with Gran Turismo on the playstation. Not tried launch control yet.
The guy that did the wheels anthracite's done a good job. The paint's really well applied, obviously skilled, great finish on them.
Because that gearbox is so fast at the gear changes, the car feels faster. It's taken the crown of smoothest gear change away from the 7er :-( it's just not possible to detect the gear changes through the seat at normal speeds about town. Even on my private race track (Shhh! ;-) the gear changes are sooooo smooth when pushing on.
I'm a v happy man.

Bobby is going to be Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo jealous.
|
I am still in therapy after having to give up my Fabia vrs..................
oh there, you have started me again :( :( :(
|
:( Those things are rapid, amazing fuel economy considering how fast they can be.
The new squashed toad version seems to be doing quite well. I think i'd buy just about 1 of every model Skoda sells if i could.

Is it to be modded to let a few extra horses free? It's cruel to keep them locked up.
John

>> Yeah :-) DSG is the best invention ever. >>
+ 1 (although in my case it's a Ford Powershift - made by Getrag, apparently). I can see the day when these twin clutches do for a lot of torque converter and manual boxes as, to me, they combine the best of both worlds.
|
With my conventional auto it creeps forward when I take my foot off the brake, what happens with twin clutch transmissions?
|
>> Is it to be modded to let a few extra horses free? It's cruel to keep them locked up.
Never seen myself as the cruel type, quite the animal lover actually. Like you say, would be cruel to leave them restrained :-) Once i've got 2k miles on it it's going to Revo for both an ECU stage 1 and a DSG stage 1.
Depending on which inaccurate, bare faced liar, rolling road you believe, should be good for 266-272bhp. Back in the real world i'm hoping for just over 255bhp... at stage 1 ;-)

Yeah it creeps forward too. Unless someone told me this was different from an normal auto, i'd be unlikely to suss it out. I'd just think it was the best auto i'd tried - so smooth and absolutely imperceptible gear changes.
It's different in so much as you never get that situation where the revs are sitting at say a constant 2k but still with gentle acceleration as the slushbox catches up. This is 1:1 revs to road speed in all situations as with a manual - when you downshift for engine braking and it blips the throttle perfectly to match, well, it's good :-)

Took these on the iPhone, colours are crap. Doesn't do it justice, will get the DSLR out for some decent quality ones.
Ignore the first 3, that's the old car. Photo 6 is the underside of the ashtray type dookit in front of the gear lever, thats for a post on Briskoda so ignore that (fitting ipod MDI & ipod lead behind the dash out of sight, but in the centre so you can charge your iphone without bringing along a ciggy socket)
Last photo's for same again. Had near enough all the removable bits of the dashboard out to fit bluetooth (hidden version, works through the touchscreen or the steering wheel controls, totally ace), oem MDI box (for ipod connectivity), and i've run the traffic aerial and power for the satnav from the fuse box along behind the dash too, no cables.
Also drilled a hole in the top box for satnav power / aerial, although much smaller than the ipod cable hole in the photos -- it's covered by a kind of carpet lining in the ashtray with just a slit for the cable, means you cant see anything, just like there's a cable floating inside the box. Very neat and 10/10 workmanship if i do say so myself!

Well, at least its capable of making phone calls - unlike the 4!

>> unlike the 4!
M's got a 4, she gets better signal than me! That carry on was either over hyped, or they've fixed it, or both!

They've not fixed it. Signal is fine until I pick up my Iphone4. Was told it only affected the first 150,000 phones sold and had since been resolved - it hasn't. Much better though since I got a silicone case for it.
|
My 4 has a good signal - not let me down any more than my old Blackberry did.

Who told you that then? the guys at carphone warehouse again?
Mine has been fine since I got my free speck bumper.

Didn't get it from CPW. Can't remember if someone from work or telephone bod in Tesco.
>> Mine has been fine since I got my free speck bumper.
No longer free. The £1.99 silicone case (and free screen protector thrown into the deal) I got from someone on ebay does the job though.

I like picture 7. Nice interior.
The metallic trim looks good on the dashboard and round the gear lever. It's much better than the job VW did on the Golf with basically the same kit. The Golf dashboard looks like the Black Hole of Calcutta in comparison.!

The Ford Powershift has creep, too. Don't know about VW DSG.

...it's a Ford Powershift - made by Getrag, apparently)...
Halewood on Merseyside is now a joint venture gearbox plant between Ford and Getrag.

Hi everyone - many thanks for the honourable mention! I've been away on holiday for most of Feb, and as some of you know I'm also a moderator on the HJ forum, so time is limited.
My original post is below for the benefit of anyone who didn't see it.
Because of being away, I didn't want the new car before March, so I'm due to pick it up on Friday 11th. Like you, Skoda, I'm going from race blue to white, although I won't go for the darkened windows as I have a thing about visibility. Looking forward to it, and I hope yours is all you hoped for. I occasionally post (as Zdenek Fibich) on the Briskoda forum.
Original post:
We hear so many stories of car salespeople who don't seem to want a sale (in fairness, not many from Skoda dealers), so here's a heartening story of a team who did.
My Octavia (April '09) was in for its 20,000 mile service at Jewsons of Oxford, who had supplied it new. While it was there, unbeknown to me, Sam the salesman and Paul the business manager valued it and prepared a PCP quote for a new identical model (vRS diesel manual) for £80 less per month than I'm paying now.
When I came back with the loan car to collect mine, it was a pleasant surprise - eighty pounds a month less. Although I was intending to keep this one for the full three years, it's a no-brainer - they get a sale and I get a new car sometime next year. I'm going for a vRS petrol with DSG this time, much the same price as a diesel manual.
Part of the reason for the good deal is that Skoda have extended their offer to pay the equivalent of the VAT on new cars ordered before 31 December - it used to be 'delivered before 31 December'.
Opportunism - yes, but that's what sales staff are paid for. Nice one, Jewsons.

So the blue one is your old car and the white the new ?
Much prefer the look of the blue one.
|
First time around it was a no brainer for me, race blue. It's really eye catching under the right light - the metallic flecks really pop out from it (never captures on camera).
8 months later and I changed my mind, taxi White was the only consideration this time :-)
|
I'm confused about auto boxes.
The changes on brother's Honda Civic auto were OK, but it suffered from roundabout hesitation - the feeling of leaving you stranded when you most want not to be.
It's probably no more than a split second, you know it might happen, and the stupid thing always gets going eventually.
But it's irritating.
Does the DSG box, and the Ford Powershift mentioned earlier in the thread, have the same problem?
|
Aye you need to watch it for that behaviour.
1. Approach roundabout on the overrun looking for a gap
2. Accelerate, the car moves forward slightly into the roundabout but starts shuffling down gears because road speed is low
3. accelerate a bit harder, car decides to drop another cog to accommodate. More waiting in the path of traffic.
4. Monster surge of torque, car starts to leap forward and immediately halts again, traction control has cut in :-)
I avoid it by not approaching on the overrun, pull the left flappy paddle as you approach, it also increases engine braking which is useful.
|
Thought you were getting black ears as well??
|
Went off the idea, piano black looks manky too easily, and the plain black doesn't seem so hot anymore :-( black vinyl wrap of the silver grill surround is the only other visual mod I'll do I think

I would say the Powershift has ever such a slight hesitancy, but it really is only ever so slight, that many drivers may not even notice it. According to road tests the VW DSG has slightly more hesitancy, but I haven't driven one extensively, and so can't say.
Automated manual boxes have more hesitancy and general lurching to them.
