An experiment to see the effects of installing every major upgrade version of windows, in order, on the same machine.
A very professional clip.

I'd forgotten how fast Win 3.1 booted until a couple of years back, I was using some test gear at work and remembered it had an embedded PC running 3.1, accessible by pushing a few buttons. Lo and behold, it booted in maybe 20 seconds or so. Yes it did run Doom.

Imagine how fast win 3.1 would boot on the hardware we have now.
Of course it couldnt see all of our 1TB drive, couldnt see most of our 4gb of memory, or access any of the functions of our high end graphics card, the USB ports, our DVD burner.
You might, if you were lucky and were good at loading up a TCPIP stack access your network port, but probaby not at 100meg.

For very specific tasks, old machines can outperform the newest whizz bang ones by miles.
Specific task - write a letter and get it printed.
Launch a flashy Windows 7 box from power up, get into a word processor of some sort (especially Word) and start typing. At minimum a couple of minutes?
Ancient BBC B with a View chip in it. Turn on. Ba-bing. Type *View. Off you go. Literally less than five seconds. orders of magnitude faster.
No comparison if you want to do anything "modern", of course, like giving all your privacy away on Facespace.
|
I wonder if anyone has done a comparison of achieving the same tasks.
One on old hardware (with old os) and one with new hardware and os.
I bet the result would be that the older one was quicker overall.
I just think in today's world, pc's do so much more than they used to so we have to accommodate it one way or another.

From power-on to typing in Word on my PC: <1'15" (Windows Vista, by the way.) No Word short-cut on my desk-top, so I had to hunt for it.
Do I win a prize?

Very interesting...but I wonder whether that username at 4:00 was really necessary! :)
