As an ageing hippy I've decided now or never to see James Taylor - so tickets booked for the Manchester Arena in July. Where to stay though ? Any ideas ?
|
how big will your tent be?
|
I'll probably be in Manchester in July.
Just call out my name and you know wherever I am, I'll come running.
|
Go sleep with Rattle and his mum and dad im sure he'd love to have you. :-)
|
...where to stay...
The Castlefield Hotel is about a mile away.
I stopped there a few years ago, clean rooms, en-suite, car park around the corner, and quite cheap for what it is.
There's a few canals and walkways in the immediate area, which felt safe enough.
I would be happy to take the bus or walk to the arena.
The Coronation Street set is just around the corner.

There are 100's of hotels within walking distance so I suggest you look at the usual booking sites and see if you can get a good deal. There is everything from your Travelodge to 5 star Hiltons within walking distance.
Just avoid anything North of the Area as it that is getting into a dodgy part of town.
|
What's Cheetam Hill like these days ? - it was a bit dodgy when I knew the place.
|
Probably miserable and grey like it always has been.
But If the sky above you should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow keep your head together and call my name out loud.
|
I will Dave ! You going to the concert ?
|
I rarely go through that area so probably best not to comment. It is now mainly populated by the asian community although many of them are starting to move out.
Like most places good and bad parts I suspect. It has had quite a bit of regeneration but real poverty still exists in that area.
An asian friend at college going back ten years used to live there, he said delivery drivers would refuse to deliver to his street. Not sure if that is still the case.
|
What a load of rubbish.
Cheetham Hill for deliveries is the salt of the earth.
They always have a good sense of humour, offer you a coffee and are happy and cheerful.
We do a lot of small C&C's and food places around there and I miss the banter with them, whatever their colour.
And they wasn't sexist either:)

I overnighted in Derby St once in the mid-90s - IIRC I'd had a bit of a domestic in the evening and decided to drive up in the early hours and grab a few hours' shut-eye before being unloaded at 8am.
Found the right warehouse, parked on the street, stretched out to sleep, no problem.
Woke up to the sound of knocking on the door, looked out of the cab window to see the top of the warehouse owner's head and wound down the window to greet him. He asked if I'd been there long, and said how crazy it was to park there. When I asked why it was crazy, he pointed to the police information sign leaning against the wall behind him, and told me the milkman had been shot right there at 6.30am the day before.
|
The milkman? Result of another domestic?
|
No decent hotels in Cheetham Hill area apart from the Park Inn (a smart city centre type hotel) opposite the Arena which is only a couple of years old.
|
nearest budget hotel is the Stay Inn, 55 Blackfriars Rd, Manchester, M3 7DB which I drive past often and looks ok.
|
No doubt businesses are fine. He lived on an estate towards Broughton and told me he had problems with deliveries. This was ten years ago too and no doubt things have improved since then.
He told me problems of delivery drivers being robbed. I am talking about domestic deliveries though.
|
Anyone know how far the Jury's Inn is from the MEN ?
|
Dunno, but Jury's are ace hotels. Lots of "Corrs" lookalikes on reception.
|
Oh I know - stayed in the Liverpool one...
|
...stayed in the Liverpool one...
There will be more Irish lasses in that one than the one in Dublin.
|
Stayed in Novotel in Liverpool - that was full of French chaps - all very metrosexual...
|
... - all very metrosexual...
I'll stick to Jury's.
I walked passed the Jury's in Manchester.
Looked fairly new, like most of theirs.
You would need to check the parking.

It's a city mile to the venue which is nothing, JI's website say that there is public parking which is vague.

...JI's website say that there is public parking which is vague...
I suspect it means there is a public car park nearby.
It's about the same distance from the arena as the Castlefield Hotel where I was staying and which I linked to earlier.
Having been on the patch, I would far rather stay at the Castlefield.
The little network of canals and paths nearby is quite unusual, Jury's surroundings are just typical city centre sprawl, lots more traffic, too.
Parking at the Castlefield was 'round the back' in a public car park, but I think you got a hefty discount.
I'd be inclined to ring both hotels to see what the crack is.

E-mailed them to see 'ow much - thanks iffy. Looks quite good online.
|
Jury's Inn will be about 20-25 minute walk straight through the city centre and Victoria Station. (Arena sits above and to the side of the station). Won't be any cheaper than the Park Inn opposite the Arena.

|
There are several car parks just on the outskirts of the city centre which do discounted 24 hour parking. Might work out much cheaper than the hotels. If the hotel does offer parking you will have to pay for it.
|
One option is to drive in from N Wales - it's just over 90 minutes from here to the airport, from the in laws less than an hour - so that may be an option - I rather like Manchester though.
|
You can get the tram from the old GMex station for either of these hotels, Rob. The Bury tram drops you off at the arena. Or just a walk down the lenght of Deansgate. ( I recommend the former if you're dragged up with 4 inch red high heels )
Castlefield's a very interestin area. Junction of canals, lots of old warehouses made into flats, eateries and a good pub, Dukes. We lunch there now and again.
Enjoy the concert....although I haven't a clue what you're going to see. Last time I went it was to see Madame Butterfly....stunning performance with a real water garden.

Well we went last night and stayed in the Park Inn Radisson, a short walk from the NCP car park (tenner for 24 hours) - 70 squid for bed and a hearty breakfast. Manchester has changed from when I was actually last in the City centre (although I was there a few nights in 2008 with work). It was like seeing an old friend who'd had a facelift. In fact it looks pretty good, with some innovative architecture and the trams - lot less traffic than I remember, far more cosmopolitan, a lot cleaner. Cheetam Hill has is lot more gentrified than I remember it when I was last there in '78.
The concert was great.

Watching James Taylor & Carole King on BBC4 right now.
|
Thanks for that just pressed the record button. He was very good. Struck something else off my bucket list. Latest thing to go on is a Premier League football match. I don't like football of course but I am strangely attracted to the idea.
|
Well
As you like Manchester so much, you can go to the, now freshly renamed for a sum of money,
Etihad Stadium* to watch Manchester City play
*that name has a great local feel to it, if you support Mogadishu United!
|
Probably go to see one of the Liverpool teams...if and when of course.
|
what else is unfulfilled in your bucket list?
|
San Fransisco, Yorktown amongst many other miscellaneous and possibly to some, mediocre, things - It's an infinite and organic list. Some stuff I should have found time for before.
|
Ah if you have never done SF and I know you are going - there are a couple of things you have to do
A night tour of Alcatraz, book it online here before you go.
Drive over the Golden Gate bridge from North to South - finest entry to a city ever.
Take the Pacific Coast highway from Carmel to San Simeon, visit Hurst Castle.
|
My bucket has a hole in it, it did contain a "see a space shuttle launch" but its gone.
|
A cheaper bet might be to visit Norwich City. Don't delay this offer available for one year only.
|
And Delia burgers, what more could you want.
|
Rob, if you're still looking in - the programme that preceded it also featured King and Taylor, and is repeated at 01.50 on BBC4, followed by the concert again at 03.15.
If you miss that they're on again at 12.15am Monday. I've just set the recorder.
|
Thanks for that, just done the LA Whistle Test stuff as well.
