Cutting costs...a step too far ? - Ted

I'm amazed at the steps big organisations take to cut down on their costs.

Envelopes from the government....the letter is in so tight you wonder how they did it.
Conversely, buy a card and struggle yourself to get it in it's envelope. I suppose that extra millimetre of paper makes a cost difference when multipied by squillions.

Something today jogged the old memory banks about this.
Our new phone book from BT arrived through the letterbox. Yes, through the letterbox.
Remember when they left a man -sized one on the step and you had to be Charles Atlas to lift it ?
We are hardly an underpopulated area...my book is for Manchester Central.
Anally, I did a bit of measuring ( Well, I'm a pensioner and it's either that or sit and dribble into a tissue ) A4 size but an inch narrower. About a centimetre thick.
It contains 3 sections, Yellow Pages type classified, One line classified and private homes.
I calculated there are about 400 entries per side of a page of the latter.
The font is about 4 point. I can't read any of them, even with my LED mangyfying glass from Lidl. I know my sight is not so good but there must be thousands and thousands in a similar position.

So, is this a bad move for BT ? Will folk think ' I can't read this so I'll not make the call ' ?...Leading to fewer calls for BT to charge for.
I see more people ringing Directory lines in frustration and being relieved of more money than they expected.

Perhaps a free microscope with every copy if it gets smaller next year !

The phonebook is online anyway, so I suspect a lot of people use that. The reason they have shrunk is a lack of advertising so they have to cut costs.

Ted,

That's all some of us have ever been able to manage. :)

>> Ted,

It's amazing how us geriatrics fill our time.

I got fed up with the snooker on the TV this afternoon so I pressure washed the pavement outside the house. The snow dumped by the JCB has finally melted and had left road grit behind which would have been walked into the house.

I know, It's a sad life isn't it ? Waiting for Mr G.Reaper to knock at the door !

I tidied out the caravan, got all the tinned food out and set it out for SWM to check the dates.
I put a greenhouse heater in to air it all then sat and looked out of the window for half an hour at the view..........I wouldn't mind, but it's parked down the path by the garage !

Almost everyone I know is ex directory which, combined with all those that don't have land lines (relying on cable or mobile), must have made a big dent in the size of the 'phone book. I too must confess I never use the thing; I'm not sure why they bother...

We keep ours, although I'm not sure why. I don't think we've looked at it since we've had a PC.

We have one on our "cataloge" shelf, it helps insulate the wall but that is all it does.

This thread reminds me. I haven't seen a Yellow Pages or phonebook in years. For internet users, both are completely irrelevant.
