 MOT Costs - CGNorwich
Went into my Skoda dealer to enquire of the cost for an MOT. "How much can you do an MOT for I said. " "Our standard charge is £50" he said pointing to a notice behind him. "That's not what I asked" I said. I asked "How much can you do it for?". "How much do you want to pay?" he said. £25 seems fair I said.

I'll book you in for next week he replied

"Now Mr Norwich, you need two new cv joints, the exhaust is leaking, it's failed the emissions test because the injectors are shot and the suspension needs replacing all round. How much do you want to pay?" ;-)

RR, you might not be that wrong. Someone I know had a free MOT at an Audi garage and the work needed was over £600. Took it somewhere else and it passed the MOT because nothing was wrong.

Here's a first - I'm defending an Audi main dealer. I took mine in for a free Mot last September. It passed with nothing to do or spend. I admit I was and still am amazed.

CG Norwich has dealt with one garage, but the garage has dealt with hundreds of CG Norwiches.

He may have won round one, but they will win the fight.

Unless he goes somewhere else.

Well your cynicism proved unfounded Iffy.

Just returned from Dealer. Passed MOT, no advisories. Enjoyed a free cup of coffee and read a few car mags while I waited.

Not all main dealers are crooks

We shall see and you could be right although have always been dealt fairly by them so far.

Will let you know

Interesting though how virtually everything you buy now from insurance to TVs, from MOTs to three piece suites has a negotiable price if you are prepared to ask. Those that don't ask end up subsidising the rest of us.

...although have always been dealt fairly by them so far...

Pleased to hear it.

I would be concerned I'd been suckered in to make the booking for £25 because they know, come the day, they can top-up the bill.

But the shops have ways of getting their revenge. If anybody starts haggling with me after I have done a job they quickly find that I am far too busy to come out to them in the future.

I remember some bloke came into Dixons once and asked me if I could do a discount if he bought 10 Ipods. My reply was no chance he said well then you have just lost a big sale. I said I know for a fact I can sell those ten Ipods in the next half an hour at the full price. This was at Christmas when Ipods have been going out the shop quicker than we were getting them in.

I am all for phoning round the best prices and when I get my service quotes I will get different quotes but I wouldn't have the brass neck to phone up and say "Oi its only an oil change do it for £80 guezzer".

In fact I did the very same when I bought my car:-

Stockport dealer who knew I was very interested in buying a car and I had just missed out on the scrappage scheme. How much can do you the Panda for £7795 (or some similar high figure, may have been £7100) sir. I didn't before to argue and phoned a dealer in Birmingham - how much for the Panda? £6100, can you drop it off in Manchester? Yes sir.

The Stockport dealer lost the sale - a week later they had lowered the price to £6k.

I just didn't want to play the stupid haggeling game and just shopped around using prices on other UK dealers websites. The only downside is I have a Birmingham number plate.

Woffle - sorry.

Better that than a Birmingham accent. :)

(Wonder who I've upset on here with that one?)

That Brummie whine isn't an accent, it's a disease of the mouth.

I usually haggle a bit, but would never dream of trying to haggle after the deal was done (unless there was a change to the original deal)

Managed to knock quite a bit off things over the years though from high street shops.

Always haggle hard over cars - catch the right dealer at the right time and there are some great deals to be done - lessens the depreciation hit, and always worth spending an hour of the phone to save a few quid. Always remember one car I bought over the phone - sales manager was very honest and told me he was on for his quarterly bonus from the manufacturer if he could shift a few more so would let the next few go at cost if I would take one that was available from manufacturer stock. No other dealer would come close.
