hi its that time again when my jazz went for its first mot and passed, i got a 3 yrs service plan on it, the manufactures warranty will run out jan 2011, and i got details on about extending it for a further 2-3 yrs.
The dealer quotes £450 for 2 yrs and includes breakdown assistance, is it worth taking it cos the jazz a reliable motor according to which ? and i can pay it monthly interest free.
I got the details of the warranty, its not like the standard 2 years you get from when you buy a car brand new, wear and tear items are not covered however wear and tear items can be covered by paying extra for the wear and tear option on the warranty.
This is my 2nd jazz, the first one had a fault on the abs which was rectified by warranty.

I negotiated a two year Honda Warranty extension in the price of an Accord Tourer I bought from a Main Dealer at three years old and boy was it worth it.
I had misting in headlights which were replaced foc ( probably £600 worth ) and then a tailgate motor problem which was fixed ( £200 worth) but the car was then written off in the floods a couple of years ago in Northumberland , the car was recovered promptly by AA who provide Honda cover some 400 miles back home and we had a hire car provided to continue our holiday ...
Up to you of course, Hondas are generally pretty reliable but by the end of the period the car is five years old and you have peace of mind .A normal AA breakdown cover for 2 years is probably £150 to £ 200 so in my humble opinion you should go for it .

It's a difficult choice. One fault and you could be quids in. I'd be more inclined to stick the 450 quid away and take the gamble that it will be OK.
|
My Honda (Accord Tourer) had a new clutch under warranty at 100k miles because of the extended warranty. Given that the breakdown insurance is worth a couple of hundred quid over the two years, you're likely to have something else go that would make it worth it.
|
SO - Had you paid extra to cover wear and tear?
|
Extended warranties are a gamble - pure and simple. (I'm having to make the same decision at the mo). Judging on the terms I have been quoted for my car, I suspect that Warranty Direct will offer better cover for less money than Honda.
|
Put it like this.
Both Honda and Warranty Direct are making money out of you..
|
Simple rule for all insurance decisions.
Would the potential loss I am insuring against be financially catastrophic or could I reasonably pay it myself. The answer will of course vary according to you economic circumstances. Only buy insurance if it falls within the first category.
|
Boxsterboy, I'm not sure I agree. I was gobsmacked that the extended warranty covered a 'faulty' clutch with 100k on it. I'm not sure I think that would have happened with an aftermarket.
Also, for the Accord, the Warranty Direct quote I got was for nearly twice the price, and they pestered me for months afterwards on email.

We had a 2003 Mazda Premacy from new and paid for a one year extended warranty when the car reached it's third birthday. The following June, the driver's airbag module needed replacing at a cost of £ 750 excluding fitting.
Does the Honda extended warranty still provide MOT Insurance?
Presumably you would need to spend £ 160 - 200 for breakdown assistance for the two years, which effectively reduces the warranty to £ 250-300. Not bad for two years coverage.
A similar warranty including breakdown assistance on our 2007 Mazda 2 cost £ 520.

Whats all this talk of £200 worth of recovery?
Greenflag Roadside £20 a year (£60 with home start and get you home etc.)
|
Depends which breakdwon service one goes with. Greenflag may cost a bit less than I quoted, but still equates to £ 120 for two years coverage including home start and get you home. Others may cost more.
Looking at website information, for breakdown assistance, at home and recovery: Britannia Rescue costs £ 85 (£170 for two years) and The AA £ 107 (£214 for two years).
Obviously some people can get discounts, etc but for two years breakdown assistance, at home and recovery, my figures provide a reasonable ballpark figure of what one can pay.
In the latest Which? customer satisfaction report on car breakdown services, the scores were:
1. AA 78%
2. RAC 73%
3. Britannia 70%
4. Direct Line 69%
5. Mondial 62%
6. Green Flag 59%
7. More Than 55%
8. Europ Assistance 50%.
Basically, you get what you pay for - cheapest is not always best.

If you have a Honda serviced by a franchise dealer then they will extend the Honda recovery - but they often don't advertise this, you have to ask for it. It's good cover too - full Euro and it cover all the usual eventualities. Some manufacturers, such as Mercedes, have the cover limited to mechanical breakdown only once the car is more than 3-4yrs old.
On our previous Jazz I asked the dealer service manager about taking the extended warranty and he said not to. He said most unlikely it would be needed and anyway, if as we'd bought new and had the car dealer serviced, then they would "look after us". I never got to test that, so don't knwo if they would have come through - Honda UK do have a good reputation for goodwill repairs though.
On our current Jazz, we got a reasonable deal on the 5yr service plan and I decided to buy the extra 2yrs warranty at the same time. The car is more complex electronically, with stability control, full climate control etc etc and anything like that can go at any moment and cost a lot to fix. However both the salesman and the business manager seemed to think I was bonkers!

hey bill payer is it the mk2 jazz you bought? i already got honda assistance for 3 years, like you said things can go wrong, electrically, am inclined towards the 2 years option but enquire about the wear and tear option too.
Thanks for the replies guys... will keep you posted.

>> hey bill payer is it the mk2 jazz you bought?
Yes we changed our 2003 1.4SE for a mk2 1.4EX in Sept 2009.
I wasn't aware there was a wear and tear option on the warranty so maybe it's changed recently. Mind you I know the servicing package has changed since we bought the car and it now covers 4yrs rather than the 5 we got.

hi there, an update, i just extended the warranty for another 2 years, with breakdown cover as welli also enquired about the wear and tear option and it was another £50 per year, which i got that included with it, and also they offered payments by monthly instalments interest free, i got a quote for warranty wise the company endorsed by quentin wilson and the quote for it was a whopping £583 per year, not worth it for me.
