well, they've got a big magnate.... that's a start.

I'll get me coat.

I'd like a Russian 4X4. Made of iron girders with a big simple diesel engine, ugly but purposeful in that way that Russian trucks are. A sort of glorified Lada Niva.

I've always hankered after a Zil limo.

Probably no better than an elongated Lada, but at least no one else would have one.

I love it! Especially the name. Now all I need to do is get myself a faux fur trapper hat.

Same here, I'd just love to have a Zil, its qualities as a car are irrelevant.

I like the hat idea Corax. I've always thought Davy Crockett had a certain style.

Wow! ... V-type, petrol, carburetor engine & 3 speed automatic - any UK dealers?

A Zil would have coped well with our recent cold weather.

According to the spec: "Intended for operation on roads with hard surface of the 1st and 2nd categories at the temperature from +40 to -40°C."

Recalling a Russian cars review being on Top Gear once, found this link.

'Mass of the loaded car' is 3550kg. What a tank! :-)

How about this 'slightly' modified Volga. It featured in Top Gear magazine years ago. An amazing conversion.

Do you think this Zil would cope with our weather?

Just read in Auto Express today that an importer is selling the Lada Niva - barely changed from when it was axed 15 years ago. The 1.7 litre three-door starts from £7995.

Also Lada said it could return within two or three years, as "this was one of the few markets where it was a success".

Has anyone here owned a Niva, and would you buy one now?

I tuned and hence roadtested quite a few in the 80's - 90's and they didn't do anything for me at all.

Given what you can buy now, new, for 7995, they are living in a dream world.
