I am aware that the Google ads that appear on sites like these are chosen by Google to match the topics being discussed. However I am always a bit un-nerved when they are matched geographically to where I live. They are often for local garages and services. How do they do that?
On a related issue, there are ads here today in Spanish for Nokia phones with free GPS.
Why have they got so lost?

Google knows who's IP address you are using and where they are based. So the country is fairly easy to do but so is city. For example, Virgin Media's IP address ranges pinpoint which area you are in.
When I was in the lake district I used a Three mobile wifi hotspot device that I have. This site then thought I was in Germany I think!
