Insurance companies ask you to provide them with proof of your No Claims Discount when you take out a new policy with them.

Do they need to do this as all insurance records can be accessed from a central database these days?

Also what happens if your current insurer won't provide proof of your NCD?

Mine are being particularly devious by asking me to phone a Freephone number rather than sending me a written renewal notice. Is there anybody you can complain to?

Last time I changed, I think I fitted into the 'no claims for more than seven years' box.

That's what I told the insurer, and they didn't ask me for any more proof, although they may have carried out their own checks.

There's a good chance your new insurer will accept your word, and you can always back that up by giving them the details of your current company and policy.

Let 'em sort it our between themselves.

My number of accident-free years and the percentage no claims discount is detailed on both my last renewal reminder letter and my last policy details document.

Mine too, L'Es. I've just moved the Volvo from Sainsburys (£451) to Tesco (£331) and I'll be sending my renewal letter to the new insurer as proof of NCD.

I moved from Swiftcover to Admiral this year. The proof of NCD was in my online account area and I just emailed it to Admiral. Insurance companies share loads of data; just let them deal with it like Iffy says.

Admiral have threatend to increase my premium if they don't receive it within seven days :(. Can they legally do that once they get the proof? I am waiting for Directline to send it me but it takes ages.

Perfectly legal. It will have been among the terms on which the premium was offered to you, so now it's up to you to satisfy those terms. If your old insurer isn't playing ball, at least let the new one know you're trying - no-one likes to feel they're being kept in the dark.

They, the old Insurer, has a legal obligation to send the renewal notice to you or your broker and if a broker they have the same obligation to you. This document will contain the number of years of bonus that you have accrued. Some Brokers and Insurers for that matter will send out a letter on their headed paper and not the official renewal notice, often late to discourage you to look elsewhere.

Did you not get a renewall? Most insurers will accept your renewal notice and proof of NCB as somewhere on there it will states how much you have
