 Peugeot 306 - Scrap value - 1997 - 1.9 diesel Peugeot 306 - Dulwich Estate
The Peugeot may soon be leaving the land of the living. It's just had a front end bump which may cost £500 to £1500 to put right (we're awaiting an estimate with second hand parts). It's currently 300 miles away and any trailering home will probably not be economical. It's worth maybe £750.

If we just scrapped it would we get anything for it or would we need to pay to have it taken away?

If it was at home I'd strip it and sell the bits on eBay but the distance prevents it.

SFAIK any car has a scrap value of about £100, just for the metal content. Cash paid and car taken away free; maybe not in all parts of the country?

You won't get £100 if it has to be collected. You won't get £100 from a "breaker", only from a proper scrapyard who will crush or shred the thing. You might get more than £100 by e-baying (edit: read the OP properly! Sorry!).

I had a 306 of that vintage up until 7 (ish) years ago. I traded it in for £200, and then the garage scrapped it.

Eh? A 6-year old 306 worth only £200?!? What did you do to the thing?

Check the web D. There are some still operating a scrappage scheme.

Just parted with SHMBO Ford Tesco XR3i , 1989 vintage - had it from 4 months old - and whilst passing its MOT wanted over four figures spending to maintain (sunroof gear completely shot). Scap value about 200 but through Nissan Micra scrappage got the equivilant of £2004 for it and a 60 plate Nissan.

I am more than happy.

Eh? A 6-year old 306 worth only £200?!? What did you do to the thing?

It had a dent in one door, a blown head gasket, a very leaky radiator and 130,000 ish on the clock. I'd had my moneys worth out of it!

Second hard parts have nearly all been been sourced by independent and we might be looking at £400 to screw it back together. It won't look pretty but it might just work. Updates to follow but so far it's likely to be not going to be scrapped - just yet.

Worth hanging on to if you can, DE. These are still good cars.

Taking performance and spec out of the equation, I reckon our 97 D-Turbo was a nicer car than our current 5 year newer Golf GT TDI. Incomparably better handling, ride and steering feel, lower noise levels, equal comfort, and very similar build quality / durability.

The 306 was well ahead of its time in many ways.

Thanks for the endorsement. It's only done 109,000 miles and I was hoping to keep it until at least 200,000. They just don't rot either.

So do you guys reckon that it's worth hanging on to and repairing a 306? Mine died (spectacularly on Hanger lane on a Wembley match day) and needs a new water pump and most likely a new gear box. cost around £1,000. However I can't find anything to match up to it.

Happy (ish) ending. We now have the front cross member (where the bonnet locks) pulled back by a hydraulic thingy, 2 second hand headlights, glued-together existing number plate and a new radiator. The cracked and bent bumper has been straightened and fitted back too. I haven't seen it but apparently it all looks OK. With new coolant and including original pick up the cost was £475.

On balance - a result.

Definitely DE. I've been rummaging through eBay for alternatives to my Escort just in case it goes bang (I like to keep on top of the market) and old 306s seem to hold their value really well so they must be well liked by owners.
