She reckons her old one's useless (samsung m11 I believe). She got her current one because it has three lenses and she thought it would take better photos (it didn't). I reckon her memory's full of junk and keep telling her to delete all the junk in it, paticularly photos.
She reckons she needs a samsung A17, because our daughter has one. What's the forums opinion. Daughter's is G5. I reckon G4 will suffice (it's cheaper).
I know nothing about mobiles and think getting a certain model because someone else has one isn't a good idea. I think all she needs is a fairly basic smartphone, for apps and photos.
As an aside, SWMBO's sister asked me what was wrong with her phone, as she reckons she needs a new one. The screen had had a youtube icon with (999+) next to it. I suggested she had thousands of youtube videos on it, slowing it down. She claimed she doesn't use youtube. It transpired her grandsons send her videos to watch, on youtube!

You're probably right, a factory reset would clear the crap and reduce the need for a replacement..
But I use the "going slowly" excuse myself when I fancy a new one.
Our latest phones have all been Motorola's, much cheaper than an equivalent Samsung, and serve our needs fine. SWMBO doesn't need a lot - decent browsing, chatting etc, and has a G86 (about £240 ) whereas mine does all sorts - video, music, TV, marine, flight and bird watching, banking, home automation, multi way video calling etc etc. I think I now have over 400 apps which all run very nicely on a Edge 60 (now around £240, I thought I paid around £300), and important for me is battery life, storage capacity (I like having a micro SD) and connectivity (I used to want a jack socket but am managing without now) - and eSim capability now on must-have (for travel, though I see regular providers are sometimes offering instead of physical sim).
I was asked to advise a non-tech friend last year and she ended up with a cheaper Motorola and she's still loving it. May have been a G54, but was def under £150.
www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3 allows you to compare tech spec side by side though not always UK models and prices are sometimes a bit out of date.

Why don't you buy her a nice iPhone?
Even I can work one of those.

It's her money and I reckon she's as tight as me!

Thanks for that ORB, I've ordered one for SWMBO (it's gone down to £99 now). If she don't like it, or something goes wrong, I can blame you ;>).
The last time we ordered a phone online, a tube of toothpaste was delivered!!!!
|
Well, I tried ordering one and , apparently, they'll notify me IF new stocks arrive within the next 30 days.
SWMBO's glaring at me!

If you wanted 5G, you might have dodged a bullet. (4G only at that price).
|
Mrs B in same boat. Her Motorola G34 5g is kaput. Dropped/screen cracked and it's dropping calls.
Prices for Motorola phones seem to have gone thru the roof.
Basically it's only used for calls/texts whatsapp and snapsc plus pairing to the car via Android Auto.
Suggestions on a postcard.

Amazon Germany has reduced the price of the Motorola G67 5G 4GB/256GB to €150, down from €260, in a pre-Prime Day reduction. It doesn't seem ghat the UK site has the same offer, but worth checking from time to time.

And I could have it delivered to the UK for €156. Maybe worth a go?

Not tempted then, Brompt?

Bromptonaut..
I had a Redmi 13c 4g sitting in a drawer as a spare but replaced it with a samsung 9" A11 tablet to use fitted in front of the suzuki s cross info screen, The samsung has a simcard slot so that's where it's good for the car..
The redmi is fine and barely used.
If you send a message via Smokie with an address you can have it FOC. For the postage just give a bit to a charity of your choice..

Thank you for that generous offer.
I'd happily have donated to Trussell Trust.
In the event Tesco came up trumps with a sensibly priced Moto delivered today and now up/running.

As another aside I strongly suggest you check out Lebara sim only deals.Particularly if you’re a light user. I pay them £4.95 a month for 5gb of usage.no problems
|
|
I picked up a Lebara sim a few months ago through Money Saving Expert. £2.05 per month with 10GB of data for 8 months. Signal picks up off Vodafones backbone so is pretty decent wherever I am. Worth checking out here www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheap-mobile-finder/sim-only/
|
What are Lebarra's rules on data roaming?
Currently both with Lyca whose 'fair use policy' is 50% of monthly allowance. Bumped that in France last month due to camp site wi fi being either carp or absent.
Virtual SIM from Saily filled the gap but E20 for barely a weeks worth wasn't exactly a bragian.
Coming to conclusion we could do to be with different providers for better shared coverage.

Try Tesco.
I think it runs on 3.
I pay £12.50 for unlimited calls and texts, and I forget the data, but it's enough for me.

Tesco piggy back onto the O2 network.

Tesco had a Moto G for around £150 which pretty much replicates her previous one.
Ordered on Tuesday and arrived on Wednesday.

I've been with ID Mobile for some years and they allow up to 30b roaming in a month (assuming your plan is a least 30Gb). Also roll over in UK only.
I think I pay about £8 a month for 30 Gb which is usually ample, though I do make a point of using WiFi where poss and def not doing unnecessary large downloads on the Sim. They feature heavily on the comparator pages.
I looked at eSims earlier this year after spending a fair bit in the Caribbean and subsequently installed (but haven't yet funded or used) one from esim.sm (quibity.com) as they have global coverage and you just pay for the specific countries (or region) you are visiting as and when you need it. Here's their Europe page quibity.com/en/travel-to/europe - this isn't a recommendation as I've not used them yet but I must have chosen them for a reason as well as price...
|
Have often thought of sticking a lebara sim in an old iphone and hiding it in my car as a tracker. But would need to
a. Somehow hard wire it
b. Have it suitably hidden.
I know they run scanners and rip out car's own in built trackers but it might take them a bit longer to find that (might not)
|
|
Or just buy the new EV you don't want to admit you're hankering after, as it will have inbuilt tracking in its app :-)
|
|
Aye but the thieves just pull the tracker sims out the cars as soon as they steal them!

This maybe thread drift but here goes. I was thinking of swapping to full fibre but have since cancelled installation, one of the reasons being I was told I would have to change my current landline phone ,Which is a Gigaset that I’m happy with. Was I misinformed?

When you move to full fibre internet (FF) you lose the old copper analogue connection to the exchange.
Most FF suppliers will support a landline retaining the same number but the technology is different; the connection is digital over the FF connection.
IIRC there are means - adapters - to allow an old phone's analogue to be converted to digital and some routers have a socket for an old phone.
We chose to get rid of the landline as, apart from our daughter who called it by force of habit back to being at Uni, the calls on it were 100% spam.

>..some routers have a socket for an old phone.
I had full fibre with Sky until recently and their standard router allows you to retain your number and analogue phone. I use my own router(s) with OpenWrt so the phone was never even connected.
Now with Vodafone fibre because Sky wanted to jack up their price when my contract expired. Like you I've ditched the landline completely.
|
I have been with Sky for TV(32 years), Mobile (10+ years) Telephone/BB ( 8+years) but moved the BB May.
Sky service has been good - the limiting factor was the Broadband (only 2 or 3 Mb)
New FTTP May 2025 - magic even included landline.
12 months on Sky wanted £35/ month when their on-line offers were less than £25. They would not budge so I looked at comparison sites. Settled for Vodafone at £22/month and £130 voucher
Vodafone is same speed via Openreach and has telephone connection for house phone.
Only complaint about Vodafone is the billing - Direct Debit - sometimes early but mostly late!
collection dates are a bit random.
|
|
If the Gigaset is a DECT phone, I would expect this to be compatible with the new router.
|

Do you mean you'll have to change your phone. or you'll have to change your phone number?
