Curious she wasn't able to exclude him if it was her car. A few days ago we were driven from LAX to son and dil's home in Irvine in her second hand self-driving EV. Amazing how it balletically and confidently swapped lanes on the busiest road in the USA (i405, 6 lanes each way) on a labour day week-end to maintain indicated speeds between 67 - 75mph without any human interference. The only physical capability you need to 'drive' it is eye-fingertip co-ordination for the touchscreen.
An interesting day's experience of a distillation of human achievement, mainly achieved in only the past 150yrs. I wonder why, when nothing much extra was achieved during 2000yrs between Euclid and Newton.......?

To name but a few, clocks, windmills, spinning wheels mould board ploughs, rigid horse collars and arguably the most revolutionary inventions of all time: gunpowder and the printing press of course.

Rapidly increasing speed of development was largely dependant on communications. Rarely are developments completely new - they build on knowledge that has gone before.
Cities initially enabled a large number of people with a wide range of skills able to interact.
The printing press enabled communication of different ideas to an ever wider audience.
Knowledge, fundamental to to progress, began to be focussed on centres of learning - monasteries, early universities etc.
Transport improvements enabled ever faster dissemination and exchange of ideas. Early long distance travel was both dangerous and slow. Got faster - first with sail, followed by rail etc - air travel now enables folk to be on the other side of the world inside 24 hours.
Finally telephony and the digital age - ideas and concepts can be exchanged and communicated in milliseconds.
In 2026 an idea in (say) London today could be worked on in (say) New York tomorrow morning. Any questions, materials and equipment needed could be there the day after.
Contrast with (say) 1626. Sailing time 6-10 weeks + could wait weeks for the right wind to leave port. Any issues arising - wait for the ship to return to London, resolve the issue and return. 6 months at best, possibly a year. Real risk the ship would sink!!
